Anybody tried this ?????

Posted by janejj on December 4, 2001, at 19:43:06

Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help me !? I have been taking prozac for 5 weeks now, 10mg for two and 20mg for three. Now i am feeling a bit better, although i am still having really down days. I'm thinking about asking my doctor to augment the prozac with Wellbutrin. I've read some stuff about it and it seems like a good combo.

Does anyone have any experience with combining these two drugs ? I am particularly interested in possible improvement in social anxiety.

Thanks for any response in advance !!!!

regards
J

Hi. Since you are getting better I would give the Prozac monotherapy at least a full 6 weeks trial & then evaluate how you are feeling. You might feel well enough to stay with the Prozac as your only med. I know Wellb is quite often used in conjunction with an SSRI. As far as it being the best choice for SA is debatable. It is usually stimulating for most & may have some anorexic effect. Check the archives here for more info. Good luck. Take care

Hi J.
I am on both drugs now and a lot of other things. Possibly the best question to ask your doc first of all is WHAT IS MY DIAGNOSIS ? A lot of them don't want to tell you (its the old self fullfilling prophecy theory-the answer is important, I have been treated for Unipolar Major Depression for 30 years, recently DX Bipolar II) find out and save yourself a lot of grief.

Both Prozac and Wellbutrin are VERY GOOD choices, alone or togeather. They have the important advantage of having a mild withdrawal profile if you have to get off them for any reason. Both are a bit energizing so insomnia can be a bit of a problem early on. If there is any possibility you have Bipolar Disorder mood stablizers (Lithum, Depakote) are important.

Sorry I can't help much RE: the social anxiety but do check the archives there is a good deal of info. on that subject. If you have noticed some improvement with the Prozac stick with it.

You get back to me and let me know how you are doing!!

I took a combo of Prozac and Wellbutrin for awhile, until I had to back off of the Prozac (at 40mg) due to sexual side effects (male).

Wellbutin is commonly used in combo with SSRI and other AD meds, very effectively, depending on one's DX.

As far as social anxiety, WB will NOT help that, in the sense that it has a tendency to "speed" you up a little bit. Some would call this "anxiety". Personally, I need to augment my WB with Tranzene to counter that effect. This combo works well for me.

I have taken the combo of Prozac and Wellbutrin and found it an intolerable combination at the time. You really do need to give Prozac the full 6 week trial before adding more seasonings. And your diagnosis isn't as important as what *symptoms* you are trying to treat (besides the obvious depression). There are so many flavors of depression, or any other disease for that matter.

Personally, I would hesitate to add Wellbutrin to Prozac, I would lean towards a different type of med. Perhaps a mood stabilizer that doesn't promote depression relapses. I like Neurontin (gabapentin) as an add-on, Klonopin, Serzone, and some of those anti-anxiety meds that are not benzo derivatives. I can't think of their names but there are many ongoing discussions regarding the depression/anxiety/social phobia combo, and many psycho-babblers have considerable knowledge about unusual add-on's and whether or not they work.

I really hope you give the Prozac a chance to become steady-state before adding any other chemicals. Best of luck!
