5 years ago I tried zoloft for six months and had very little gastro difficulties. I then tried paxil and was doing fine for 3 months. But then I gradually developed a tight feeling in my waist, my breathing became shallow and I developed very bad heartburn. I weaned myself off paxil and the side effects stayed with me for another two months, and disappeared.
Now, anytime I try and go back on zoloft (or paxil) my mood improves but the side effects immediately return, also. My stomach always seems to feel full and laughing can be painful when I take meds. My esophagus almost feels like it's getting pulled down. Wellbutrin also gives me similar problems (whereas it gave me no gastro problems when I first tried it in 1996). Got the same results when I tried celexa.
I have had two Upper GI exams and a CAT scan of my pelvic region, which detected nothing. Supposedly, there is nothing physically wrong with me. Is it possible that my body simply changed somehow and will never be able to tolerate ssri's again?

Hi Brian, It could be!
Perhaps, you could give a temporary stop, and after weeks, begin again with ssri.
Our brain works in a stange way! It seems to forget if you do not provide with continuity your meds.
Worst side effects of ssri are sexual desease, but i see that you didn't have this problems (or not?).
You could also use gastric modular meds to resolve your gastric problems (do not know US name of this meds, but you can find lot in commerce)
Bye

Brian:
I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I took SSRIs for long time in the early 90s, and then got sick of their side-effects, so I switched to Depakote and was on that for over a year and a half. When I got sick of that BS, I went on Celexa. Lo and behold... I started experiencing the "tightness around my waist" as you have said, along with acid reflux. I started getting waves of muscle tension all over, actually. I eventually weaned off of that after about a year and went on Topomax. What followed was the worst experience of my life, but despite that... the tightness etc. went away. While trying to recover my Topomax debacle, I went back on Luvox since it was a "known" quantity. The symptoms returned.
I've seen little or nothing mentioned about this until you posted it.
This is the end of the thread.
