Has someone already experience that ? mood stabilizers like lithium, clonazépam (a benzo.), tegretol making you more depressed ?

no. But all AD's I've tried have made me more depressed. I have yet to try any mood stabilizers. Hopefully soon.

Yes, but I think it's because they remove the "covering" anxiety and allow me to experience the underlying depression.

In my experience it's not the "mood stabilizer" that makes me feel worse. It's the side effects. I feel great on Lithium, but I have such terrible skin and hair problems, that I have gotten very depressed. Tegretol did a fine job of smoothing out my highs and lows, but I physically felt awful. I had stomach pains, constipation, heartburn, headache, dry mouth. All those side effects made my life miserable. Hence I got depressed.

I just wish I could find a damn mood stabilizer that did cause such painful side effects. I would have it made!
Good luck to you

Hi Chloe

How long did it take with tegretol to stabilize you mood ? Did this med make you sleep better at nights ? and did it reduce you anxiety (if you have) ?
Thank you for giving me these informations.

I would say about 14 days or so. It takes awhile for you body to adjust to this med, and to get to a level that will stabilize your moods. It's wise to go up slowly on tegretol so your body can acclimate to this med.

>Did this med make you sleep better at nights ? and did it reduce you anxiety (if you have) ?

I do think I slept better on this med. Primarily because I felt less anxious. Though it took a while to experience this. I think at first, I felt a little "off" or edgy, but that quickly went away with time. For me, Tegretol was calming. I just couldn't tolerate the gastrointestinal side effects after being on it for 2 years. I changed to Trileptal, the "cleaner" newer version of Tegretol.

Good luck

Clonazepam is a "downer" as well as an
anti-convulsant. It could certainly exacerbate
a depression. The others are less like to
do so.

Tried Lithium for ONE DAY and felt so horrible I could barely function.

I've been on Lamictal for about a month now, slowly working my way up to 100 mg. It did seem that after each time I increased the dosage I would feel worse -- more ups and downs. I thought it was my imagination! And things would level off after about a week. But when I got up to 50 mg, the anxiety and agitation was extremely severe.

I finally added Serzone (was trying to avoid it because I thought it would make me too fatigued). It has really helped; the anxiety is almost gone, and I am not any more tired than I was before.

Lamictal may be worth a try, and then add some kind of AD to it.

good luck,
cindy
