buspar side effects

Posted by tensor on November 12, 2001, at 14:43:01

Hi,

I've just started to take Buspar(four weeks) against anxiety, and I would like to hear others experiences of this drug. It does have rather strong side effects that lasts maybe two-three hours after intake, which are fatigue, weakness and dizziness. Will this side effects vanish with time? I do feel more relaxed and calm than before, however. I also take Remeron against depression and done so for a couple of years.

Generally buspar taken stand alone has one
of the more benign side effect profiles. It does
have a mode of action (alpha-2 antagonism) that
Remeron also has, so it may be potentiating this.
I would hope it would wear off over time as most
side effects do. PS. would you feel comfortable
lowering the remeron dose if the buspar works?
Buspar probably has fewer side effects.
The only side effects I had on buspar were these
wierd brain zaps when I moved my eyes. Rather
curious. But that was my experience and everyone's
will vary.

keep us posted,
john

I've taken Buspar for 6-7 years with only mild side effects. How much are you taking? I have ranged from 5-30 mg per day, usually 10-20.

The main side effect I've noticed is much as you describe: a feel a bit stoned for an hour or two, not really either pleasant or unpleasant, and then I feel "normal" - but much less likely to react to stress by becoming angry or pooping out. It has a small effect on my alertness, and I have an odd tendency at work to bury myself in routine tasks instead of getting on with the high-priority things ... even more than usual, I mean ;-)

Oddly enough, it seems to make me a more agressive driver (but not an angry one). I have to be careful of that and the reduced alertness/attention.

My theory is that it is not the Buspar itself that has the good effects - the Buspar makes you feel woozy but then is metabolized into other chemicals which have the desirable effects.

The side effects do diminish with time, but rather slowly. Consider asking your DR. about taking a lower dose, or dividing it up more.

My only experience with Buspar and Remeron was the reverse of yours - I took Remeron briefly after a long time on Buspar. It was the Remeron that had intolerable side effects for me - so-called restless leg syndrome, which doesn't even begin to describe the agony of waking up once a minute and having to move violently. So there may indeed be some sort of interaction between the two - my experience, though listed as a possible side effect of Remeron, seems to be quite uncommon.
