Anybody experience hair loss because of the use of an antidepressent?

Hair loss, alopecia, is a side effect of MANY medications, some as simple as Tylenol. As far as AD meds go, I suspect you will find a smattering of this type of side effect affecting 1-3% of people taking them. If that is your concern, and there are no other connections causing your hair loss (e.g. hormonal changes due to menopause), you should look into switching to another AD med. You did not mention what you are taking. If you do so, I will provide you with data straight from the 2000 PDR (Physican's Desk Reference).

WOW what a great offer!I was taking Celexa and was absolutely convinced that
it was making my hair fall out.
I litterally was pulling gobs of hair.
Very distresssing!
Doctor switched me to effexor and it seems to
have stopped...although there is still some fall
out, it is hard to know if its normal shedding...
and I am paranoid, or what.Anyhow...if there is any info on Celexa, Prozac
and Effexor regarding hair loss...
I would be very grateful!!!Thanks a TON!
DreamyYeah...if you can get any info on these two and
also

Follows:Celexa:Listed as infrequent is alopecia,eczema,dermatitis.
Most common(by %) effects:
dry mouth 20%
Nausea 21%
somnolence(sedation) 18%these 3 significantly higher than placebo
Effexor: Listed as infrequent is
alopecia,dermatitis, acnelisted as frequent is
emotional lability (instability of emotions)
dyspensia (upset stomach)
abnormal vision, ear pain
anorgasamia (you can figure out what that one means).
dysuria (urinary problems)
hematuria (blood in urine)
highest adverse effects vs. placebo: (at 75mg) increases with doseasthenia (bodily weakness) 16.9%
anorexia 14.6%
insomnia 22.5%
nervousness 21.3%
dizziness 19.1%Prozac:
Listed as infrequent:
alopecia, eczema, dermatitisside efffects vs. placebo for depression
nausea 21%
anorexia 11%
dry mouth 10%
tremor 10%
insomnia 16%soooooo.... although all three of these meds list alopecia as "infrequent" they still affect a % who take the meds. Whereas PDR data comes from the drug manufacturer, the FDA gets kinda nosey about their clinical trials.
As with most meds, YMMV (your mileage may vary)
If you think one med MIGHT be a problem, there are quite a few more that do similar positive things with fewer negative things. It is, however, very individualized, so you will have to get a Pdoc that will listen to your concerns, and work with you. Hope this helps.PAX

I seemed to get this on my 1st shot at lamictal.
It was accompanied by severe dermitits. I'm not
sure but maybe I was scratching my head so hard
or was hyperfocused on the side effect that I
blew it out of proportion (the hair loss). On a subsequent trial of Lamictal, I used
anti-dandruff/psioriasis shampoo and I also took
zinc/selenium supplements in a good multivitamin.
That time I never suffered hair loss.-John

Thanks for getting back to me on this!!!
What I gather is that YES...I could very well be
having hair loss due to the Celexa and Prozac.Told my doctor that I quit Celexa cause it was making my hair
fall out, and he pretty much told me that was nonesense!
I tell you, it was coming out in gobs and was horrifying.
I am now on effexor and not having any trouble. Thanks again...at least now I know I wasn't delusional!
