hi. Since all the AD's I've tried made my depression worse and in some cases even caused me to become suicidal I have learned that it may be because I am really bipolar. I am hoping to try a mood stabilizer soon but tomorrow I will be getting moclobemide. Can this reversible MAOI help someone with bipolar disorder? Or just like the usual AD's is it only for depression? I am hoping since it's supossed to work very differently from the usual AD's that I will not suffer from a worsening effect.

moclobemide treating depression in unipolar

Ps, have you tried Lamictal?
Very tolerable and effective for treatment
refractory bp.
Can toss AD's on top if the Lamictal
doesn't pay the bill.-john

haven't tried anything except AD's so far. And i deffinetly dont want to try any more AD's except the non usual stuff like maybe remeron.>

Ok, so if you are bipolar, then you have been
barking down the wrong routes. Its unlikely for
a bipolar to do well an a stand-alone anti-depressant.
You need to be an some sort of stabilizer (depakote,
lamictal,lithium or a low dose anti-psychotic like
zyprexa,geodon), before adding an AD. Otherwise
the AD will give "unpredictable" reactions. Such
is the nature of bipolar. With a mood stabilizer,
the add on of the AD could give drastically different
results than you have seen.good luck,

I know that feeling of getting worse on an AD. That has happened to me on several ADs. One of the worst in that respect was Moclobemide. Hopefully it will be better for you, but like the other SSRIs you've tried all Moclobemide is going to do is increase that serotonin again, which has always made you feel worse. Just something to ponder.

you just told the story of my life -- I react the opposite way to all the ADs out there, and all the stimulants -- than I am supposed to react.Finally, my pdoc said she thinks I have a "bipolar spectrum" or something along those lines. I don't get manic, but the mania may represent itself as anxiety.
Anyway, she said that MAOIs are not normally given to people with bipolar. I am now trying Lamictal. I am tired and irritable, but I am only on 50 mg, and my pdoc says I can't really attribute those feelings to the Lamictal yet -- it could just be my normal depression since I am not at a therapeutic dose of Lamictal.
I may try adding Serzone to it to help with the irritation, but I'm scared to death to try another AD. Have you tried Serzone yet?
We should continue to keep each other posted on our progress, since we seem to have the same chemical make up and difficult background with meds.

Good luck at your next appointment ... hopefully you'll be able to try Lamictal, since it's supposed to be one of the best mood stabilizers as far as side effects go. I started it a couple weeks ago, but still feel pretty bad. I'm not sure if it's the Lamictal making things worse, or just me, since I'm not on a high enough dose yet.Sleeping problems ... actually, like you, I sleep too much (or if I'm awake, I wish I could be sleeping!) I usually have to take a nap when my daughter takes her nap in the middle of the day, which is a bummer, since there are so many things I need to get done.
I hope we both find some relief soon. At least it's nice to know that we have support from each other.
Keep me posted on your progress!
