LAMICTAL QUESTION-Itching Skin

Posted by Mr. Scott on October 10, 2001, at 22:56:30

I have been taking Lamictal for 5 days. I have recently been diagnosed as bipolar 2. My skin is itching all over. Should I be concerned about this? I left a message for my doctor and he hasn't called back. Just worrying about the rash thing.

You should be worried- I would even consider the ER at this point. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news- but it's better to play it safe- Judy

I got this itching skin with all the anticonvulsants. Even with Lithium. Usually this symptom disappear by itself after a week or two.

So don't worry. You just have to watch if you don't develop a mini rash which might evolves to this dreaded SJS.

My humble opinion.

Scott,

I have been taking 200mg Lamictal per day for a few months now. Initially, I had the same feeling: my skin sort of itched all over and actually peeled off one big patch (it felt like a bad sunburn at that patch). I also started to get more acne.
Follow the gradual dosing procedure very carefully so as not to make things worse. Once I was stabilized at 200mg for a few weeks all these skin problems went away. It certainly was annoying for a while though.
Apparently Lamictal binds to melanin in the skin and eyes. Maybe this is the source of the irritation? I am definitely going to avoid sunburn while on Lamictal; who knows what cancer potential lies in the UV+melanin+Lamictal combo?

I had to discontinue lamictal the 1st time due
to dermatitis and rash. On my 2nd trial I dosed
the sucker really slow and I even went all out
paranoia rubbing my entire body with anti-psoriasis
shampoo. I don't know if the anti-itching/dandruff stuff
helped, but perhaps it would.
I didn't get the dermatitis or rash but
it took me 2 months to get to a strong dose.
As long as you don't see a big 'ol rash you
can try lowering the dose or waiting it out.
Anyways good to check with your doc.
