Tourettes, PTSD.

Posted by Bassoldire on October 8, 2001, at 18:48:26

I have Tourette syndrome, a pretty bad case of it. I suffer from the extreme tics such as yelling obscenities, arm jerking, sometimes even jumping and screaming. I have managed to keep the most extreme tics under control enough to work, but it is extremely difficult. I have been on a variety of medications that dont help hardly at all. I recently read about PTSD, and all the symptoms listed, I have. Is there any link between Tourette's and PTSD? I know that PTSD is very treatable, but im afraid the Tourette's may interfere with treatment.

Can you please list the meds you have
tried and what they did (or did not do.).
This may help us give you better
information.

I have not heard of any relationship. Tourettes is a neurological disorder and PTSD is by definition trauma induced. It is possible to have both, of course.

PTSD diagnosis is made not only by symptoms but by history as well. If you are resonating with the list of symptoms for PTSD, it does not necessarily follow that you have PTSD, because the symptoms do overlap with those of other disorders. If it were me, I'd want to check out if Tourettes can cause some of these symptoms first. Do you have a good Tourettes specialist? Do you have a good therapist? Psychopharmocologist?
