Help! I need positive feedback on Celexa

Posted by genelowery on September 24, 2001, at 13:56:45

I am about to start Celexa for assistance in sleep problems and obsessive thoughts. My problem is that I am afraid of taking medication. I am not too good with side effects. Those of you who have taken this med please ease my fear about using it. Also, I am worried about gaining weight with this med.
Thank you so very much in advance.

As you will find out on the board, you have to try the med to figure out if it is gonna work for you. Some of us have amzing reactions...some so/so...some bad. Maybe keep a journal of your thoughts each day so you can look back to chart how you are doing.

Best wishes..

Jay

I have been taking Celexa since June and the only side effect I still have is an increased tendency to sweat. I felt a little weird when I first started taking it, but that dissipated within a week and was completely gone after two (at the full dose). I actually lost weight on Celexa, probably because it got me moving again and stopped me from eating all the junk I eat when I'm depressed. As far as sleep goes, give it some time - I took Ambien with the Celexa at first.

Gene,

I think if you are going to try a serotonin antidepressant,(an SSRI) Celexa is probably the best first choice. It has very specific actions, has a low danger of interaction with other medications, and is considered by a lot of people as a weaker, milder SSri (compared to the others). I have taken all five that are available and it was the *only* one that I could tolerate a standard dosage of for more than a week or two. If you have a history of sensitivity to side effects ask your doctor about starting out very low on the dosage and gradually increasing it.
