How do I apply for disability? Medical insurance?

Posted by worn_out on April 9, 2000, at 8:20:20

Need Advice:

I have decided to give in to my illness, bipolar disorder, and accept my disability. I don't have any idea of how to proceed!

At my place of employment I have short term disability (which I am currently on), and long term disability available.

My long term disability will only last 2 years because I don't have a "real" illness such as heart disease which I might have caused by my lifestyle(this is a dig at the way insurance is for bipolar people in this country).

What is available from SSA and how do I go about getting it!

In addition, what do people do about health insurance after being dropped by the employer's policy? I live in Tennessee, but TennCare seems iffy! Anyone have the answer?

Thanks

If you want to apply for SSD, go to your Social Security office and get the forms. Apply as soon as possible because your winnings will be retroactive. They don't tend to take you seriously unless you have an attorney. However, I'm not sure the mental illness is enough. Do you have physical problems too? State disablity is also only temporary, but might help you for awhile. Doctor's offices usually have those forms. Good luck.

If your disability makes it impossible for you to maintain gainful employment, then you should qualify for SSI or SSD. Medical insurance is most likely available too, but may differ from state to state. You will need a lawyer who will probably take your case for a percentage (~25%) of your lump settlement. You may have to wait a year or more before you actually see any money. It might not hurt to check different laywers to see what their fees are. There are usually laywers that specialize in these types of cases.

Hi worn-out, me too(just kidding). Dr. Ivan's Depression Site has information on disability and SSD. I think if you get SS disability you will be eligible for Medicare after 9 mos. You really don't need a lawyer to apply but you might if you are rejected and appeal. Anyway check out this site http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.html>

I hope things work out well for you. A.

hi, I recently was approved for ssdi. I followed the directions. If I were to do it over again, I would have my medical advocate actually fill out the forms, that process was very difficult for me. The social security disability site has lots of good information and I found all of the workers ih my state to be very hard working and straight forward. I hunted locally through my regular attorney and financial advisor for recommendations. The attorneys I talked to said to apply and if I was denied, to get an attorney at that point. And of course: document document document. So I guess you could say, I saved 25%.if you think I can help more, contact me here.

good starting place. You can apply by phone I think, get started. I found people at office very helpful. If they aren't ask for a different person.
