My Mom took 400mg/day for epilepsy. I suppose it might be effective as a mood stabilizer, but it is not very "liver friendly" and my Mom lost all her teeth in her 30's from chronic use of it (gum disease).

Dreamer - There have been some success with Dilantin™ (phenytoin) when used for mood disorders, as well as in some case reports of efficacy in neuropathic pain, but failures have far outnumbered the successes. There has been some renewed interest for it's use in treatment refractory depression and some cases of bipolar disorder depression, but, for the reasons Mitch has mentioned, I believe that the risks of phenytoin far outweigh any potential benefits.

My 2¢ - Cam
