What helps Panic Attacks/Depression BEST?

Posted by FluteTheatrix on September 2, 2001, at 12:26:13

I recently posted.... I have panic attacks/anxiety/Depression and I am allergic to SSRI's. I have tried Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft. I need help soon! I leave into the Navy in 2 months. Does anybody know something good for treating panic and depression? I need something with barely any side effects. I need something that does not include insomnia or increased heart rate! DOc prescribed BUSPAR but I am hearing many bad things about it. Any suggestions?

I been getting advice that Buspar and Serzone is a good combination. Anybody agree? Ps... I am very sensitive to side effects!

> I been getting advice that Buspar and Serzone is a good combination. Anybody agree? Ps... I am very sensitive to side effects!

I had HORRIBLE side effects on Serzone, and I didn't find it worked much, if at all, as an antidepressant - I think the only reason it kept me from offing myself was that it made me too sluggish to even lift myself out of bed most days.

Seriously, you may be different, but of all the meds I've tried, I'd say that Serzone is the worst, both in terms of not being much of an anti-d, and in terms of side effects (slept 14-16 hours a day and was still tired; was always on the verge of tears; BAD leg cramps while walking, sleeping, or attempting to exercise; severe muscle weakness (i.e., couldn't ride a bike it was too taxing); fever-type symptoms if I missed a dose or increased the dose.

Pretty much, if anyone asks me about Serzone, I tell them to stay far, far away. I'm an anxious type myself, and my doc thought that maybe the sedating effects of the med would offset that - well, I certainly was calmer, if you have a taste for understatement - I seemed extremely mellow because I was a total zombie! I ended up quitting my job because I couldn't work on the stuff - I couldn't stay awake long enough on the stuff without crying at my desk. Just a bad, bad experience.

I don't know what I'd recommend - perhaps trying the BuSpar, since your doctor already prescribed it, although I've read some iffy stuff about it, too.

Maybe talk to another doctor??? Or tell your doctor you need to hurry, just like you told us?

Sorry I don't know too much about other meds.

Wellbutrin/Remeron
Wellbutrin/benzo(xanax,valium,librium,or klonopin)
Wellbutrin/Zyprexa.
I found Serzone to be Just worthless, also. No AD effect whatsoever.
Buspar didn't work for me either.
Tricyclics- desipramine, etc w/benzo will definitely work. Because of some side effects this older tried and true approach is not recommended much anymore. It is still worth keeping in mind. Maybe for a good short term solution until you can find something better. > > > > > > >
But, there are many many other combos, people in here know about. I am sure you will get some good suggestions.

I'm on Wellbutrin for depression, imipramine (a tricyclic antidepressant) for general anxiety, and Ativan (a benzodiazepine) as needed for panic. The combination is working well for me and I haven't needed any Ativan for about 5 months now. I still have some anxiety, but it is the normal kind - not the kind that keeps me from doing things.

I just wanted to offer an experience to balance Kathleen's bad time on Serzone.

I agree the drowsiness from Serzone can be hard to take at first, but it does mostly go away, only very slowly. I got my Dr. to let me start at just 50mg in the day, then work up gradually from there. In the end, I took my whole daily dose at bedtime (200-400 mg. depending mostly on season).

From what I've read and experienced, for most people Serzone has about the least (& fewest) side-effects of any A/D. The drowsiness is the worst. It does seem like for every medication, there's someone for whom it's the Drug From Hell - Remeron was mine.

YMMV,

Tony P

I have literally been on all of the "new" antidep-all ssri's (celexa was best for me), wellbuterin, Remeron and Serezone were invented by the makiers of Hell, I agree. Effexxor XR has been of "great" relife. There are some anti-panic properties and side effects are tolerable. Buspar is not partic. noted for having ANY anti-panic properties. The idea behind Bupar was to find an alternative to the Bezodiazepines -- which in reality are safe despite what is often heard--The main problem with them is dependency, both physicall and mental, This should not be confused with addiction, though. Buspar has been swown to work on GABA receptor sites in the brian, thus minicking benzo. It is of general practice to provide them to i0nd with anxiety, but not panic.
as for the suggestion of inipremine (sp?) or any of the tricyclics there is an incredible thirst associated with them. I do not know if you can carry enough water during training--I belive thier is an increase in sun-sensitivity as well. I would talk to doc about Xanax or klonopin and maybe Exxexor. I would also consider a delay in service for mecd reasons if possible until this gets soted out. Good Luck!! ~Tony

IMO,

1) Klonopin: if you don't get depressed, very good
for that. 1-4mg, usually 1-2 good enough and
preferable definitely at lower dose.

2) Xanax: Shorter half life than Klonopin, good
especially if Klonopin doesn't work or makes you
depressed. Again good to keep dose as low as
possible. I have less experience here.

3) Nardil: Will almost sure work for panic,
and most types of depression except sedated bipolar\
low type.

4) Parnate: If Nardil too sedating (unlikely
for most).

Great book: Jack Gorman "Essential Guide to
Psychiatric Drugs" 1997 paperback v3, $8.
small consise covers disorders treatments
great - he is highly respected.
