Hi all. I'm starting on Depakote tonight, for BP, coupled with Prozac, Topamax for now, but which will eventually be tapered off (the Top).
I'm just looking for feedback from those who have used this med.
Thanks a lot!
- K.

I only had limited experience with Depakote, and was given it as a "mood stabilizer" to help me sleep (counter to Wellbutrin). Personally, I thought it made me groggy the next day, but I had the 500mg ER version that was actually designed for migraines. I thought that the little help I got from it was not worth the risks of liver damage that can be associated with its use. However, in BPD, that might be an even trade off for you if it helps your mood. Sorry for the limited feedback, but there is a lot of info on here about Depakote (or ask SalArmy4me).

There's a new Depakote ER formulation that promises to minimize drowsiness...

Hi, K
I have gotten some medical community and other users confirmation on taking zinc and selium to prevent/minimize hair loss, (the the tips section here). Keep in mind alcohol is very dangerous while taking depakote. I have taken 1000 mg for over 8 months and although not the answer, has helped stablize some of the swing.

As someone who was still struggling to maintain a moderate level of alcohol consumption (it will be most difficult for me to give up wine) - whine - is it difficult because of the potential liver damage? Are there other interactions, more immediate?
Never mind. I'm still looking for an excuse. I'm surprised my pdoc didn't mention it.
It's not a problem.
Do you have any meds you avoid (just major ones)?
Thanks for the info...
