Prozac Wellbutrin for PMDD?

Posted by Janell on August 20, 2001, at 12:30:44

I have been on Prozac (20 mg/day) and BuSpar (30mg/2x day) for almost 4 years for PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder - which is VERY bad PMS!) and depression/anxiety. In the last 4 years, it has helped my problems, but...I have gained over 60 pounds and I'm tired all the time. I also have started feeling "flat" emotionally all the time. My pdoc suggested I either switch to Wellbutrin (to try to combat the weight gain and tiredness)or perhaps take a combo of Wellbutrin and Prozac. I am apprehensive about taking Wellbutrin, as I understand it can cause agitation. (The last thing I need for my PMDD days is more agitation!)

Has anyone taken Wellbutrin and Prozac who has PMS/PMDD and had good results?

Hi Janelle,
Well, I don't have the best news for you ... I do have horrible PMS (probably bordering on PMDD) and I am on Prozac (10 mg/day) and Wellbutrin (150 mg/day). For two weeks out of the month I am fine. But the minute PMS hits, I am so agitated I can hardly function. I usually cut back on the Wellbutrin during this time, and add Klonapin at night which helps a little, but not enough.

I have been experimenting with other stimulants, including Adderall and Adrafinil, to see if they are less agitating.

It does seem the Adderall is less agitating (I've tried it for a week at a very low dose - 2.5 mg). But after about 5 days, I started to get very fatigued -- I'm still not sure why. Some kind of rebound effect, maybe -- coffee does that to me too. Brings me up, and then I crash so hard I have to take a 2 hour nap. Or it could be because I cut back on the Wellbutrin too much.

I've heard good things about Adrafinil not giving the agitation or the rebound effects of other stimulants, but so far I have been feeling pretty "poopy" on it. Kind of tired and out of it. I may just need to take less since I'm quite sensitive to meds.

Sorry for the long post here! But you are right in your concern that the Wellbutrin could cause more agitation during PMS. It may be worth a try, though, since all of us are different.

Good luck and take care,
cindy
