quitting smoking

Posted by sar on August 16, 2001, at 12:59:29

i've been a pack a day smoker for nearly 8 years. i really love cigs but hate what they are doing to me (adding a peculiar raspiness to my voice, shortness of breath, etc). right now i have 3 Step One nicotine patches plastered to my body and am chewing 2 pieces Nicorette gum. is this excessive? i feel like puking. or is that because of the vodka and the heat?

i've gone to this extremity because i feel one patch + one piece of gum isn't enough. in fact i feel like the patch hardly works at all by itself.

thanks,
sar

Maybe you can get a doctor to prescribe you some Zyban.

Good idea; interestingly, Zyban is just another name for WELLBUTRIN!! When it was approved for anti-smoking they had to give it a different name! So if sar is depressed, Zyban could also help with that!

i've been on prozac for some months for severe depression. what is the interaction implication regarding taking both prozac and wellbutrin? (i'm also on klonopin and soon to be on depakote.)

thanks,
sar

I don't have personal experience with either Wellbutrin (Zyban) or Prozac, so I can only guess that since both are activating meds, combining them MIGHT increase agitation or anxiety. However, the Klonopin should help mediate that.

Just a GUESS about interaction between Prozac and Wellbutrin. I would imagine some people on here have combined these two meds and hopefully could give you better feedback.

Hi sar,

Today is my one year aniversary as a non-smoker. I loved cigarettes almost as much as living. They were my best friend, my tranquilizer, my joy. I had smoked for 20 years. Much to my dismay, my endocrinologist told me that if I wanted to feel better, I *had* to quit smoking. I desperately wanted to feel better, so with the help of the patch I quit. At first I had a terrible time. I went thru the grocery store chewing on a straw, looking like a redneck, but it helped and I didn't care. I would go for walks when the urge became overwhelming, and believe me there were times I would have smoked my shoe string if it would've helped. The most important advice I think I can give you is to know that every wave of craving **does pass**, and every day makes you stronger. Please hang in there, it does get easier.

BTW, I tried WEllbutrin, zyban as an antidepressant and this was before I knew that it was for nicotine withdrawal. It really does help with the craving. I went from 1 1/2 packs a day to about 5 without even trying. It just naturally happened. If I know at that time it was the drug and it could've helped me quit, I would have stayed with it until I had stopped smoking.

Don"t know SAR how many of us are planning to live on with mental illness unti the cancer years (40 years of smoking is what we're talking about in general for cancer to hit-what my ear nose and throat guy said). I personally have stopped worrying about smoking, do have a raspy voice, and sore throat. But I hope by the time I get cvancer, if I do, I'll have the guts to put a gun to my head. For the present I have enough dealing with being crazy and raising a family. Can't cope with anymore,

However, good luck to you in this matter. But rip off that patch-- I tried it and it made me insaner, agitated irritable, uncontrollable.
