dumb question re: take this medication with food

When a medication, i.e. Geodon, is supposed to be "taken with food," is it ok if you ate an hour ago and are certain there is still food digesting in your stomach? Also, I read that drinking some milk is ok, since milk is food. What about drinking just 1/4 of a cup? Sometimes people are simply not hungry. Does "take with food" include food you ate an hour ago?

Hehe, probably. It's probably okay. It's not going to cause a HUGE problem one way or the other, it's just that some drugs absorb far better if there's food in your stomach. And some can just give you a tummy-ache if there's no food in your stomach. Check with your doc about Geodon specifically, and meanwhile just try to take it with food MOST of the time. I find nutrition-bars help, I just eat half of one and that cushions my stomach from meds. :)

PS the only dumb question is the one you didn't ask. ;)

GBG - There are no dumb questions regarding medications. Technically, an 'empty stomach' is one hour before or two hours after a meal. In the case of Geodon, it works better if you have eaten a meal. This is probably due to better absorption of the drug on a full stomach. Therefore Geodon™ (ziprasidone) should probably be taken with a main meal.

If it were just a case of stomach upset, as with the older anti-inflammatories, a couple of crackers or half of a glass of milk would be fine. In this case, if you want the 'most bang for your buck', you should probably take Geodon with a meal.

I changed the title since there are no dumb questions. :o)

Hi Cam,

Correct me if I'm wrong here but what I do, since I take my first dose of Geodon in the a.m. before breakfast is that I take it with about 5 psyllium caps at the same time. Psyllium is a fiber more bulking than bran and I believe that constitutes "food," doesn't it?. Then, AFTER my coffee, I eat a small breakfast. Good enough - or am I fooling myself?

Factoid: Geodon is absorbed up to 50% better when taken with food.

Actually, the absorption of Geodon is increased up to two-fold (100%) in the presence of food.

Karen - In the case of Geodon, I believe that it is meals with a higher fat content that increases the absorption, but since I have not worked clinically with this drug perhaps someone who works in the U.S., like Sunnely or Elizabeth, can further clarify this.

Sincerely - Cam

I realize that this post is from last August, but I was doing a search and came across it. You should NOT take ANY meds 2 hours before OR 2 hours after taking bulk fiber. It interferes with the absorption of the medicine or even vitamins. That is what it says on my jar of Metamucil. Collette
