Bob - I don't believe that aspartame enters the body (ie. it stays in the GI tract) and is not metabolized. Basically, it goes right through you. When in doubt, don't ingest it. I avoid aspartame containing drinks, not because of any medical concerns; I avoid it out of politeness for those around me (it gives me bad gas).
I haven't read any studies of researchers measuring the amount of asparatame that goes into a body, is the same that comes out, but I am sure the studies have been done, probably in the approval phase.

I read somewhere that Aspartame converts to formaldyhide (sp?) at temps above 62 degrees. I avoid it like the plague.

I would be interested to know where Cam W found out that aspartame goes right through your body and is NOT metabolized because I've read a lot about bad side effects and would think that it would HAVE to be metabolized in some way in order for these effects to occur.
Also, I had a boss, who became the boss from he!! and some of us at work thought her personality change was due in part to her MASSIVE consumption of Diet cola with aspartame in it. The woman had dry mouth and would not drink anything (not water, not seltzer, not juice) but DIET COLA!! She must have gone through a dozen cans a DAY, between work and home. At this high a "dose" I would think the aspartame was having harmful effects, and I had read somewhere that it can cause irritability. (she was beyond that!)

Janelle - I think I mixed up aspartame, with it's 2 amino acids, the the sweetener the is the stereoisomer of sucrose (saccharine?) and this is not metabolized.
High dose may cause problems in people with PKU (phenyketonuria), but one could equally blame the high levels of caffeine that your boss was ingesting. Also, she may have had other reasons to manifest her symptoms (severe stress, slight PKU problem, stimulant abuse, etc.).
Sorry for misleading you, sometimes the old brain mixes things up. Thanks for catching my mistake. I and my family do not ingest aspartame, but it has shown to have problems in a subset of people. - Cam
