I cannot get beyond a dosage of 25mg due to the cognitive dulling side effect of this drug. Has anyone experienced this and found a way around this problem?

Seems to be a common side-effect. In a recent study Topomax was shown to have significant cognitive side-effects whereas Lamictal & Neurontin did not differ from placebo. I've heard it referred to 'Dumbomax" on this site. It's the main reason I haven't tried it.

Jah, while I had had some cognitive dulling in the beginning (very briefly), once I was above 125 mg/day +/-, I did not have such. In fact, when the topamax (stupamax is what I've heard) was workin' fine for me, I was definitely as sharp intellectually as I really should be. It was quite strange, but it worked as monotherapy for me quite amazingly (first time I felt good in years) until ... I experienced an intolerable and rare side effect (receding gums).
Anyway, everyone responds differently and has different needs. I would presume it's worth a shot for you.
[currently, 225 mg/day effexor and 150 mg/2X/day wellbutrin with pretty good response thus far!]

The only way "around this problem", and it's not a complete fix, is to titrate up really slowly.
My experience with Topamax has been positive, for what it's worth. I had the cognitive problems for about a month or so even after I hit 250 mg, so it is a side effect, but it subsided then and it's been very helpful except for sedation with me. I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem though.
If you can handle feeling rather "drunk" for awhile (i.e. if it doesn't interfere with a job) it might still work for you).
