Changes in my Thyroid Panel and TSH levels

Posted by AnneL on August 11, 2001, at 22:42:54

I was so long winded in my post above about "Effexor Ramping up Effects. . ." that I forgot to mention that
in only six weeks my TSH went from 0.933 to 5.759.
I have been treated for hypothyroidism for 15 years and have been well-maintained on Synthroid 0.15 mg. (Always near 0.933) My endocrinologist feels this shift from a euthyroid state to a hypothyroid state was caused by estrogen in the birth control pill I was taking for a short time. Evidently, estrogen binds T3 or something like that. Today I started alternating Synthroid 0.15 mg. with 0.175 mg. per instructions from my endocrinologist until my TSH comes down. My question: Can this sudden shift in TSH in addition to the progestin in oral contraceptives been an additional factor in my recent depression "relapse"? How long might it take to get back to "normal" levels? Thanks, AnneL

YES.

Don't know, but my guess would be that your thyroid needs to be back at the level that is normal for you to see results.
