I need advice on getting off of the anti-psychotic RISPERDAL. I read the book "Your Drug May Be Your Problem" and it says that it could take up to 2 years for me to taper off of it. Is there a better way to do it? Can I get off this stuff faster without taking any other drugs? I am sick of this drug, I gained 100lbs. and can't work it off. I took risperdal because I went into a manic episode, but that is over and gone. My doctor won't get me off of it. I want to be the way I was before taking this dam medication. Is there anyone out there who has taken this drug and gotten off it? If so could you please tell me how you did it? I think two years is too long to wait to get off of it.

I was taking 6 mg of Risperdal and then went cold-turkey with no problems. I don't know why you anticipate so many problems...

How long have you been off? Did you experience any withdrawal symptoms? That's an incredible feat. In the book I read it says you have to come off slow or else you will relapse.

If you are bi-polor, you do need to be on something to control the mania. It does not go away by itself. Could you and your doc try something else.

James here......
Sal, consider that you have just told someone who may have significant BP that stoping meds will cause no problems. Given your posts you of all people should not the danger of this. Folks who are on AP's for mania don't need to be told to just stop the meds, we need to give them options.
yes I know all you were doing is saying you had no problems stoping this cold and not telling him to go without meds, but not everybody will realize this.

I don't think my doc will help me get off the meds, he is convinced I need them. My only hope is to taper off. How long should I taper off this chemical crap??? I don't know what to do.

He says I have schizophrenia. I think I really just have a mood problem but I don't believe in medication anymore. It just makes me a zombie.

There is a big difference between schizophrenia and a mood problem. Both, I think need medication.
However, I don't think there is any question about schizophrenia, it does.If you are having the side effects of weight gain and zombiefcation (been there) this med is not right for you. You need to make your specific problems with this med known to your doc. There are many meds you can try. Maybe a second opinion
to pin down what condition you have would be helpful to you. If your doc is unwilling to help you with these side effects, seek another.
