Any Geodon Success for Bipolar?

Posted by AngieT on August 3, 2001, at 11:17:43

I have Bipolar II rapid cycling. Am currently on Zyprexa 15mg, Topamax 200mg and Prozac 20mg with great success, however have had horrible weight gain from the Zyprexa and so we are going to try dropping that and adding the Geodon. Was wondering if anyone has had any success? What side effects should I be aware of, if any, and will the go away with continued use? I am starting out at 20mg and will be up to 40mg in a week, will continue to take the same dose of Zyprexa for the next month just to make sure I don't 'go off my rocker'. Any advice or input is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.
Angie

I am not BPII but major depression and switched from Zyprexa to Geodon this year. The transfer was seemless from 7.5 mg Zyp to 80 mg Geodon. I overlapped them for one week. Once off the the Z I had a couple of weeks of interrupted sleep. The Geodon seemed to be more activating and of course the Z is sedating.

I started taking my Geodon dose once in the morning instead of divided and the sleep problems went away. The G is supposed to have a short half life in your body but I don't feel a let down in the evening. I am fairly med resistant (don't see many side effects) so I may be atypical but the change worked for me. Now if I could just lose the extra weight.

My son was initially put on zyprexa and he just stood in front of the open fridge door saying, "What can I eat next?" He gained 10 lbs. in a month and a half which is staggering, considering that his is only 5 1/2 years old and went from 62 lbs. to 72 lbs. The doctor never asked about this effect but I mentioned it and he was promptly switched to geodon.

He takes geodon and topamax now, and his eating has returned to normal, and since he is a growing child, his extra pounds are beginning to even out. The results for him on these two medications seem to be very good, and I am pleased to see him eating one or two servings and stopping instead of wanting three apples in a row, then two bananas, then more toast, etc. etc. etc.

Good luck to you.
