wellbutrin/prozac/klonopin....which one?

Posted by akrake on July 20, 2001, at 8:39:53

Hi. I was on proazc 20mg for pmdd for about a month. it worked wonders but the sexual side-effects were terrible...so i visited my gyn and he said to try klonopin...i filled that rx, but didn't use it...i got on wellbutrin sr 150mg/2x day about 2 weeks ago. i don't think it's working yet....after reading some of these threads, i wonder if i should use the klonopin with wellbutrin. i thought about using the prozac like sarafem (only during day 10-14 of cycle), but i'm scared of the sexual side effects coming back. any suggestions? i'm still a mean witch to everyone and can't control my emotions (scream all the time & no patience).

thanks.

Why? As far as I know, the combination is fine.

Wellbutrin takes a while to work. I'd suggest that you try taking the Klonopin, not regularly but only when you feel you really need it (like, once every few days).

Have you ever taken the birth control pill, and if so, do you think it had any effect on your mood?

BTW, you don't come across as a mean witch. :-)

I think Klonopin is great for PMS. Better than anything else I've tried for irritability anyway. Prozac has such a long half-life that using it for only two week probably wouldn't make a difference in terms of sexual side-effects (there would be plenty of it left in your system). Zoloft or Paxil would probably be better in this case since they do the same (though not as well in my opinion) but only work for 1 or two days instead of six weeks.

Hi -
Funny, I am on the same combo right now -- prozac, wellbutrin -- and i add klonapin during PMS. I have no problems with the wellbutrin + Klonapin combo (was on that alone for awhile), but it didn't help my depression. The Klonapin is good for PMS irritability and anxiety.

take care -

i've been on the wellbutrin for only a little over 2 weeks....so i'm going to hang in there! and use the klonopin if need. thanks.

i've been on the pill before, but not in about 5 years. my gyn wanted me to start using the pill as PMS control, but i didn't start it because my family has a history of breast cancer...i just don't like the risks (even though he says he doesn't think the bill causes breast cancer!).

akrake,

i've been on klonopin (twice daily) for a few weeks now. prozac had killed my sex drive (which i didn't mind, as i've no sex partner), but klonopin kicked my drive up--not to where it used to be, but i don't care right now anyway.

by the way, one of the listed side-effects of klonopin is "increased libido."

I just want to make sure you've considered changing or beginning Birth Control Pills. I was on one, I had terrible PMS. I told my nurse at my annual exam and she gave me a different one (with a different hormone combo), she said if this one didn't work we could go a different direction, too.

Anyway, so the pill could regulate your hormones and cause changes. :)

Hi Amie,
I'm still taking the Prozac -- only 10 mg. because I have a low tolerance for meds --but I am going to decrease it to 5 mg. and maybe get off of it altogether ... it does kill my sex drive, but the worst side effect is horrible anxiety! I'm not sure what to do about it; the anxiety has gotten a lot worse since I increased the dosage. I'm putting in a call to my pdoc tomorrow.

No, the Wellbutrin doesn't give me a headache, but does cause some irritation/agitation at first. I went to a lower dose and I was able to work up to a higher dose (200 mg now) with no problem.

Hope your headaches go away! Are you going to try another AD in place of the Prozac?

hang in there!
-cindy

Adverse/positive depending on what your romantic situation is, I suppose!

hi cindy:
i've decided to try to space the wellbutrin at least 9 hours apart. i take the first between 6-7a and the second dose at 4:30p or so. i may have to space it out further. headache was only mild yesterday.

Are you going to try another AD in place of the Prozac?

(actually it worked but i couldn't deal with the side effects!). he suggested i use wellbutrin at first but when i said i couldn't sleep at night he changed to klonopin. i'm supposed to call him in 3, well, now 2 months and TALK to him about whats going on with me.

being the independent person that i am, i started wellbutrin instead of klonopin. without checking with my doc! then i realzied i was having these rage moments and i sought out this board. after a particularlly bad day (friday) i decided i would use the klonopoin too....but yesterday was suprisingly calm. i didn't need it. (and it was day 16 of my cycle...so i was probably raging due to wellbutrin and pms).

Sorry for reposting, I forgot the littl square (previous poster) again

Sar. You know there is no such thing as a positive *side* effect;) I read something frankly quite hilarious in my own CPS (=PDR here, for the last time, from now on people will just have to figure out what I mean by themselves). Anyway. They list "drowsiness" as an adverse effect (actually an "undesirable effect") of Restoril, a very strong sleeping pill. And let's not talk of that horrible euphoria cancer patients on morphine have to contend with. (For Xanax, they list a buch of adverse effects that have a much higher incidence for placebo like anxiety, involuntary movement and muscle contractions). That makes me wonder: Who writes these monographs anyway? Are they done automatically by computer or do trained monkeys do the job. I know pharmaceutical companies don't want to get sued but this is absurd.

Hi Amie --
As I mentioned earlier, I had a HORRIBLE week with anxiety and irritation -- and it was definitely aPMS week, PLUS I had just increased the Wellbutrin ...

Thanks for helping me make the connection ... Wellbutrin + PMS don't mix well! I will take less of it duirng those two weeks from now on. I think laying off the coffee in the morning should help me too :)

Hope all is well,
cindy

(and it was day 16 of my cycle...so i was probably raging due to wellbutrin and pms).
