depakote

Has anyone ever been precribed depakote for "impulsivity"? Is that actually recognized as a psychological problem? I was recently treated by a team of residents/med students who breezed in and out.

What is depakote usually prescribed for?

I don't get manic, I just go with my gut, I'm adventuresome to a dangerous degree. The only time I act manic is when I'm drunk, which to me seems not unusual.

thanks,
sar

Depakote or carbamazepine work well for impulsivity, in those who the clinicians and/or the patients consider it a problem. Impulsivity can occur regardless of mania, and could be a result of an unnatural flow of dopamine into the synaptic cleft.

Sar,

My son was prescribed Depakote for mania. He took 250 mg in the am and 250mg in the pm. It ended up that he was not manic, he has adhd and being treated with Wellbutrin SR 150 mg. He was really impulsive as well, but he had many other symptoms like high activity level, etc (typical adhd symptoms)

I know you need to have liver function tests while on Depakote.

By the way...my son was only 9 years old when he was on Depakote! I wonder if there are any other alternatives used to treat impulsivity???

Debbie

Perhaps olanzapine.
