Doc put me on Topamax today (25 mgs to increase to 125) for weight loss due to my long hx of SSRI's which have casued a gradual, but sustained weight gain. I'll keep you posted. One question though, does the does really need to be >200?

Are you taking anything else or just the Topamax?

I lost substantial weight (40#) last year on Topomax, over about about a 9 month period- that part was great!
However, I got the problematic side effects- mental dulling, and lots of word-finding problems, and went off it. It also seemed to have no, or imperceptible, mood stabilization effect for me.
This year, still needing to lose weight (Depakote and Nortriptyline had really taken me up the scale), I wanted to see if I could tolerate a low dose. At 25mg I did start to get a little slow weight loss, but I started losing words again and having trouble putting sentences together in the right order. Sadly, not an okay trade-off.
But, I do sometimes read a post here from someone who has tolerated it, and gotten mood benefit without these problems.
Good luck,
Cece

Hi Lynne-No, it is Rx only, and should be. It's powerful stuff, with potentially quite disruptive side effects (per my post). >
I have heard that there are trials going on for using it specifically for weight loss, so it may eventually be labelled for that.
Maybe your pdoc would let you try it under medical supervision- never hurts to ask, huh?
