LESS BENZO + LESS SSRI = SOCIAL ANX RELAPSE- HELP!

Posted by AMenz on June 18, 2001, at 10:34:14

I am in a mess here. Had to back off SSRI because they make me cycle. Had to back off benzo's (from 1 mg to .5) because lithium +benzo + estrogen deficiency gave me severe cognitive dulling.

Cycling is better, cognitive dulling improved. But now I have killer social anxiety. What to do?? Please help.

I have a novel idea for you: Gabapentin

Pande, Atul C. MD, FRCPC et al. Treatment of Social Phobia With Gabapentin: A Placebo-Controlled Study. J of Clin Psypharm. 19(4):341-348, Aug 99:
{NOT FROM MEDLINE}
"This study has shown that gabapentin produced a significantly greater decrease in the symptoms of social phobia than did placebo as measured by the LSAS. Treatment response seemed to be influenced by age and gender, an observation for which only speculative explanations can be offered. Because women exhibited greater responses to placebo, the drug-placebo treatment difference was smaller for women than for men. Despite the influence of these variables, gabapentin seems to have anxiolytic activity, which confirms the anxiolytic profile seen in preclinical behavioral experiments."

Thanx, but I have a paradoxical reaction to gabapentin and can't take it. (I virtually had to be hospitalized using gabapentin as mono therapy).

Consider adding omega-3 fish oil.It has anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects and a dose of 3g daily is safe according to the FDA,except for those with blood disorders.Higher doses of up to 10g have been used in manic -depression and schiziophrenia.It is available without prescription.The capsules are usually 1000mg but it is the active chemicals of EPA and DHA which you add to see how much you are taking.They usually come to 30% so about 10 capules per day would be well worth trying.You may notice that you will smoke and drink less on them.
Our ancestors lived in the sea and 20% of the human brain is made up of fish oil

Thanks. Any reports that it triggers hypomania?

Omega-3 has an antidepressant effect and therefore could elevate your mood like other antidepressants,perhaps to manic levels.One case was reported in Archives of General Psychiatry.Its normal action is as a mood stabiliser though
