Seeking comment on 5-HTP for depression. Been taking Atenolol 75mg for past 3 months for HBP. Also taking a mild dose of Maxide. Starting to notice signs of depression & fatigue which are known side effects of Beta Blockers like Atenolol. My doc recommends effoxor. I'm hesitant. The threads I've seen lean toward the negative side for side effects & withdrawl problems.
The depression is mild at present, but I have a history of depression & was on tricyclics and then SSRIs for several years. No ADs for past 3.5 years however. Anybody taking 5-HTP? What doses, etc? The literature I've seen indicates some contraindications if HBP is present. But it seems thast Effexor raises BP as well.

Wilm,
I read a few interesting articles about how 5-HTP is beneficial for depression (something about how it's a pre-cursor to serotonin or one of those). I decided to try it out & found that it offered no benefits for me. I can't remember how much I was taking, but after about 3 weeks on it, with no changes, I stopped it.sunny

This thread raises a question I've been wondering about. 5-HTP supposedly increases serotonin. Therefore, it seems to me it would be a bad idea to combine it with an SSRI. Opinions?

> DaveHi Dave,
Yes, from what I've read it's not to be taken with any AD, especially SSRIs. Possibility of Serotonin Syndrome, a very bad situation. My interest in 5-HTP is primarily that I'm looking for some help with mild depression without the unwanted side effects of ADs. I think my current depression is a result of taking the beta blocker, Atenolol for HBP. I'm hoping I can modify this drug or change to another type of med for Hypertension. The BB works well in controlling my BP and a high resting heart rate. But I hate the depression.Wilm
