Hi Victor,

I tried Ultram as one of many adjunctives to Effexor, as it can boost the anti-depressant effect for some people when combined. Since it's used adjunctively with Effexor, it seems that it would be relatively safe to take for pain while taking Effexor. However, each person's body chemistry is a little different, so stay alert for side effects and inform your doctor should any problems arise.

Best wishes,

Mark H.

Ultram has a major interaction with Effexor:
The coadministration of serotonin reuptake inhibitors and other agents with serotonergic activity, including tramadol, may potentiate the risk of serotonin syndrome, which is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition thought to result from hyperstimulation of brainstem 5HT1A receptors. Patients receiving this combination of drugs may also experience an increased risk of seizures. In general, the concomitant use of serotonin reuptake inhibitors and tramadol should be avoided if possible, or otherwise approached with caution if potential benefit is deemed to outweigh the risk. Close monitoring is recommended for signs and symptoms of excessive serotonergic activity such as CNS irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, myoclonus, ataxia, abdominal cramping, hyperpyrexia, shivering, pupillary dilation, diaphoresis, hypertension, and tachycardia.

Hi Victor,

I have taken it with 150 mg and 75 mg. of Effexor XR and was fine,
I was also in the ER and given a massive amount of morphine IV and it didn't seem to be a problem at all.
But, then again, anytime anyone is given a massive amount of morphine, every thing seems ok! LOL
No, seriously, it didn't harm me. But you need to check with your doc or pharmacist before taking it if you're that concerned about it.
I'll take just about anything, once, to see what happens, but I'm a little crazy! Good luck, I wish for a pain free future for all of us!
Autumn

Hi Victor,

Aside from the possibility of serotonin syndrome with the combination of venlafaxine (Effexor) and tramadol (Ultram), mania can also be induced by Ultram especially if combined with an antidepressant.

Ultram is a central nervous system (CNS) acting pain killer that activates the mu receptor and enhances the action of serotonin and norepinephrine by interference with their uptake and release mechanisms.

It has been suggested that Ultram may have antidepressant. If this is the case, Ultram could induce mania itself in a manner similar to that of antidepressants. Ultram may also be useful in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Finally, a case of anorexia nervosa successfully treated with Ultram was recently reported.
