In addition to havind depression I also suffer frequent classical migraines (which the antidepressant medications alleviate somewhat). However, I discovered some years ago that the painkiller I was prescribed contained a mild synthetic narcotic called PROPOXYPHENE. I find that the propoxphene alleviates my depression/anxiety better than anything else I have ever taken (including pethidene, buprenorphine, morphine and codeine). I have NOT become tolerant to the analgesic or beneficial mood effects NOR have I developed any side-effects (e.g., constipation). I go for long periods - without withdrawal symptoms whatsoever - when my depression eases off. I'm NOT about to advocate the general use of opiods to treat mood disorders but I would like to know if anyone else has found propoxphene useful for depression WITHOUT getting euphoric or hooked on it? Is there perhaps a group of so-called atypical or treatment-resistant depressives like me who actually need tinkering with their opiod/endorphin system?

Look forward to hearing from you.KS

KS,
I GET RELEIF FROM MY DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY FROM ONLY OPIOIDS!! FOR ONE EXCEPTION AND THAT IS XANAX, BUT IT ONLY HELPS SOMEWHAT AND NEEDS AN INCREASE OF DOSE EVERY MONTH OR SO. I HAVE ACTUALLY FOUND DARVOCET(PROPOXEPHENE) TO BE QUITE HELPFULL, IT HELPS ME FEEL "NORMAL" NOT REALLY "HIGH" LIKE PERCOCET OR MORPHINE DOES.. THAT IS INTERESTING THAT YOU HAVE A SIMILAR RESPONSE, I REALLY WISH THEY(FDA) WOULD APPROVE OR DEVELOPE AN OPIATE RELATED "ANTIDEPRESSANT", IN THE MEAN TIME SOME OF US MUST FEEL LIKE CRIMINALS, WHILE FINDING RELIEF WITH AN "ADDICTING" "CONTROLLED" DRUG I GUESS PEOPLE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH A MEDICATION THAT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD!? . HOW MUCH DO YOU TAKE A DAY ? THIS MIGHT BE SAFER THAN ULTRAM, THE DRUG I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT BUT NO ONE REALLY SEEMS TO KNOW! GOOD LUCK AND KEEP ME POSTED, THANKS,
ROGDOG

Theres a few people on this board who effectively use low-dose opiates.

There is a school of thought that part of the reason people become so easily hooked on heroin is that some/many are self-medicating un-dx'd depression. Having seen a couple of friends "before & after", so to speak, I think there is *some* weight to this argument.
The fact that you haven't developed any tolerance suggests yr theories may be true for yourself.
KS, can I ask you what dose of Propoxyphene makes you feel normal?
Rogdog, I say f*ck the laws. Getting yr life back is what counts. I am of the 'do what you must' persuasion (qualifier: provided you've exhausted 'conventional' options).

Hi J
Thanks for your response. To answer your question, I take 1 or 2 capsules of dextro-propoxyphene HCl. Eeach capsule contains 65mg. I only use a MAXIMUM of 4 capsules in any one day becuase the effects last 4-6 hours. In addition, I am on a 'traditional' antidepressant (Effexor 150mg XR)and I try to use the propoxyphene only when my mood goes really low. I also try not to use the opiod for long stretches (normally 1 month is my limit before I give it a break for quite some time).
Hope that helps, and keep me posted.

Rogdog:
thanks for sharing, i also only respond to the off-label use of opioids, which am just starting to explore with the kind help of my understanding MD.There is a short thread on Ultram, i personally had an extremely negative reaction to it.
Have just started on Darvocet 100, is not helping as much with the fatigue as Hydrocodone did.
Also, if you have been on long term use of meds
w/ APAP or Acetomeniphine you should review this with your doc and perhaps have liver function checked as this @#$@# can cause irreversable liver and kidney damageDoug
PS: Netiquiette considers use of all caps as shouting ;o)

I know I'm quite fortunate to have her (my GP) on my side. Best to go the prescription route because then you have the safety of a professional monitoring your use of this (and any other medication).

--- Ditto --- I was switched from Hydrocodone (due to tolerance) via Ultram (intolerance). Am on 100/5.5 prop./apap 1-2 every 4 hours.Have had even better experience than with Hydrocodone. No ups and downs, no trouble with building up a tolerance (yet, at least).
It took a few days to get the full effect and have been doing well since then.
My wife and i gave a dinner party yesterday, at my suggestion. I did a lot of the cooking, had an easy time socializing.
For me this is real progress. And oh, by the way, have cut back to 100 mg zoloft from 300 mg. and completly cut out the 3 nightly remeron i was on!
I am biased, of course, but after years of pain and a steadily worsening treatment resistent depression, i have a right to be.
Dear fellow patient: If you are in pain, either mental or physical, or if you are unhappy or not where you would like to be with your current regimen - - Try out one of the Opiates - -!
If your MD is reluctant, get another MD, you are the one in prison, not S\He. You are the one suffering.
Here is a quote from The Journal of the American Medical Association:
The fear of addiction when opioids are used to
manage pain, even cancer pain, is prevalent among
the public, patients health care professionals and policy-makers throughout the world 6)-11).
However, this fear is not warranted and is one of
the factors that can result in ineffective clinical use
of opioids and reluctance on the part of policy
makers to allow greater import, production and
prescription of opioid analgesics.Doug B
