I just found out I'm pregnant. I have stopped lamictal, and stopped risperdal a couple of weeks ago. I'm on 6 mgs klonopin and xanax prn- there's no way I can get off klonopin, but can switch over to xanax okay. I stayed up all night reading abstracts, found studies on klonopin (cleft palate, increased miscarriage) but really couldn't find the effect of xanax on the fetus. I think I'm about 8 weeks- hard to tell, I was on birth control pills. I guess I'm asking which is the lesser evil- klonopin or xanax? Thank you, anyone- judy

dear Judy,
oh, congratulations!
here's a couple of links for you. You can see that xanax is considered to be a greater evil than kloponin.

http://www.hvmedweb.com/mw1/qanda/xanax_pregnancy_deiulio.htmlI use Copernic 2001 basic for searching the net, it's a great program and you can download the basic version for free. It uses about 10 different search engines simultaneously and thus is a very powerful search program. For example, it gave me 43 references for Xanax pregnancy fetus search, all giving relevant answers to your question.

Neither med is 'evil' but they should not be taken during pregnancy.

Generally this wouldn't be a good idea to use Benzodiazepines in Pregnancy. My book states that Xanax is safer than Klonopin.

I think it happened when I started the first pack of pills (in March), but I'm not sure. I need to get a bHCG done, but I'm having difficulty going to an ob/gyn (this would take a lot of space on the other board) I also have a history of multiple m/c, and yes I was on lamictal, risperdal, klonopin and xanax and yes I'm scared to death. I've stopped everything but klonopin- tried to cut the 6mgs in half and I was pouring sweat and shaking this morning until I started putting xanax under my tongue. I thought I was going to have a seizure. So that's the story- judy

Dear Judy,
Congratulations! I pray that all goes well. The times I felt the best emotionally in my life were when I was pregnant, so I hope it's the same for you. I just read something recently on medline that made the same observation. Relapses tend to occur in the very last weeks. Anecdotally I suspected this, but had never seen it in print before. Perhaps feeling good had something to do with those major moves we made during each pregnancy:)
Blessings,
Chris A.

Therefore, you should only cut BZ while taking Tegretol. Anyway, I wouldn't mix anything with Klonopin right now, at your state. Let's hope for the good !> I know, I'm on 6mg of klonopin, tried to cut in half and almost had a seizure (see previous post)- judy
