I am taking 112.5 mg. Effexor ER daily and the only way I could deal with my own anxiety relating to potential side-effects(yes, I am very nervous about taking meds)and AD-induced insomnia was to take a benzo. I started with Xanax (major mistake due to extreme rebound anxiety) and moved to a longer acting benzo, Klonopin 1 mg. at bedtime. Sleep beautifully, wake up refreshed. Have been on this regimen for one month. Depression good, sleep good. Probably will need AD treatment for 9 months to 1 year to hopefully achieve a higher rate of remission. Any thoughts on long-term benzo use? My thoughts: *If its not broke, don't fix it*. Your thoughts? Thanks, AnneL

Even if the benzo that you are taking decides to poop-out in the future, there are always new ones to replace it like Oxazepam, Temazepam. Or perhaps you could try something that is not a benzo like buspirone or paroxetine to solve your problems.

Thanks Sal, Knew I could count on you. What is the brand-name of buspirone? Paroxetine is Paxil correct? Why would adding an SSRI like Paxil work for sleep? Or is it mainly for anxiety? Temazepam is Restoril, what is the name-brand for oxazepam? AnneL

In the United States buspirone = BuSpar; paroxetine = Paxil; oxazepam = Serax.
Paxil works for many persons' anxiety disorders rather than sleep {all SSRIs eventually alleviate people's anxiety for that matter}.
I myself took all these medications at one time or another.

Anne - I was prescribed Klonopin for anxiety and insomnia several years ago. I found it worked great for insomnia for about 2 months, then pooped out. I would NOT encourage taking a benzo long-term for insomnia. It's typical that the sedating effect wears off after a while, and since benzo's can be addictive it may be better to try BuSpar (as Sal suggested) or maybe Ambien or something like that. I still take Klonopin every day (have taken it off and on for years) for anxiety - the anxiety benefits have not diminished, but it no longer puts me to sleep and lets me get a good night's rest without waking like a zombie (as so many sleep meds do). Just my 2 cents. Good luck to you -
