I am Bipolar. I also suffer with acid reflux (GERD). It is a constant battle to balance Psycmeds (FXR, Neurontin, Topamax) as they aggrevate my stomach. I take Prilosec & OTC antacids for GERD. I feel like I am chasing my tail. I take the psycmeds to improve mood-this causes stomach distress-which causes anxiety-I take a Klonopin-Sleep-Start over- ad nauseum. I have talked to GIdoc & pdoc with no resolution. Any suggestions? TIA
PS-I have tried alot of different med combos & all seem to exacerbate GERD

Have you tried Prevacid or the newest Protonix? I take Protonix for a condition similar to GERD caused by Tegretol. Protonix is taken once-a-day, is covered by insurance, and has no side-effects.

Or maybe you could just switch to Lamictal, which I have never heard anyone complain about stomach problems with.

I have the same problem. Suffer from severe GERD, PAD, OCD, and depression. Every psych med I take causes my reflux to act up more. I had a terrible time on the SSRIs. I think it is the 5HT3 serotonin receptor that was causing the trouble. The old ADs have anti-cholinergic side effects, which also make the reflux worse. Now I am taking Nortriptyline, Xanax, and Neurontin. I am still anxious and depressed. Need something for the OCD. My GI doc says my nerves need to calm down and then the reflux will get better. But every bout with reflux causes more anxiety, which in turn causes more reflux. I don't know what to do anymore; neither do both of my docs.

I think that Zyprexa would be a novel solution for your OCD. It works on serotonin, but from a different angle than the antidepressants do.

The only problem with Zyprexa is that it has moderate anti-cholinergic effects, which I am supposed to avoid according to my GI. Do you know if the "new" Zyprexa (forgot the name) has less anti-cholinergic effects and also helps with OCD? Thanks for your reply
