I have just been given Effexor for depression and anxiety. I am 28 years old and ahve never taken medication for depression before. I have been reading this message board for the past few days and am now concerned. Has anyone out there had success? Should I even waste my time? I just want to feel better. I do not know what to expect. I just want to feel better. Please...your advice is much appreciated. Thank you.

Becky ~ There are no guarantees that Effexor will be the med for you, as everyone reacts differently. From personal experience, however, it worked great for me. The smallest dose for a year, then double that for the next year. In retrospect, I realize that I was not only numb to the "bad/sad" emotions, I was numb to it all. But at least I was functioning and not crying eveyr day. Weight gain caused me to go off, and now I'm searching for a new drug. Good luck!

Effexor is a viable option for you because:
*It has the possibility of affecting serotonin, norepinephrine, _and_ dopamine--thus increasing your chances for relief.
*It has no anticholinergic side-effects.
*Sexual disturbances are reported less than with SSRIs.
*It has gained the acceptance of psychiatrists worldwide in less than 8 years of U.S. FDA approval.
*It has few significant interactions with other medications.
*The idea of it being addicting due to withdrawal effects is unfounded; if it had any chance of being addicting, it would have been labeled a Schedule IV substance by the U.S. DEA.I myself took Effexor XR up to 375 mg and beyond. The only side-effects I had were sexual in nature, and these were remedied by mirtazapine. I withdrew from Effexor "cold-turkey" and was lucky enough to not have withdrawal effects.
