Melatonin + Depakene + Risperdal - OK ?!

Posted by jimmygold70 on April 4, 2001, at 9:16:25

I'm taking Risperdal 1mg/day + Depakene 400mg/day. Since Depakene dose is still too low to contrast my hyperarousal, I'm taking melatonin for sleep. Actually, I can't fall asleep without 3-6mg melatonin. I've never discussed it with my physician, but is that combination OK ? Can melatonin interact with any of these ?
(After all, melatonin is a 5-HT metabolite, and risperdal is a 5-HT2 antagonist: I'm afraid of either augmentation or loss of effect...)

Jimmy,

I don't recommend it. Valproic Acid (Depakote & Depakene) is a nasty drug with lots of side effects, so be especially careful. Talk to your doctor and see if something else would work, like

- raising your depakene dose
- take klonopin
- take ambien

Get yourself a non-addictive sedative whose interactions are well known, such as Ambien, Sonata, or Serax.

Is Depakene Nasty ?

Is Depakene that full of side effects ? I'm taking 400mg/day which is very little. I don't experience much side effects except for metalic taste in my mouth (wierd, isn't it?)

So what do you people say ? That I should expect much more side effects on the more therapuetic doses ?

Remember that there is a new Depakote _ER_ on the market that is taken once-a-day, has no side-effects taste-wise or otherwise (at least that I have experienced), and is relatively inexpensive. Spread the word.

Good to hear, but we don't have that in Israel. Tell me if you know how to order that internationally.
