Wellbutrin SR for anxiety? Celexa , Buspar?

Posted by Shari on April 2, 2001, at 1:52:18

Okay, my story is short, recently diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, mild depression.
Took Zoloft for almost 2 weeks, after 4 days I felt so much better! much more motivated, problem, I started getting killer headaches, had gland swelling in my throat, and got a bladder infection out of nowhere.
Back to the doctor, he gave me Wellbutrin SR (trying to give me stuff he has as samples right now since this is obviously a trial and error thing)took 150mg a day for 5 days and just doubled couple of days ago. No major side effects really, a little jittery, but I'm slipping back to feeling exactly like I felt before, tired a lot more, motivation decreasing, (okay, I know 4 weeks is the normal time to see if something is going to work for you or not but from some of what I've read tonight Wellbutrin doesn't seem to be the best choice for anxiety problems)
Wanting to call the doc about maybe trying Celexa or Buspar but Buspar is described as a mild tranquilizer and Celexa is not supposed to be tranquilizing but it seems like so many people are saying Celexa is making them tired? Has Buspar made anyone excessively tired? My anxiety makes all my day to day stuff a chore, it's a struggle to do everything and I'm very tired alot already, I loved the feeling Zoloft gave me but couldn't live with the headaches. So worried about sexual problems too, I've had such a low libido for so long(chalked that up to being overanxious too much and irritable)and would hate to not be able to orgasm because at least I can still do that right now. Seems like with some on the Celexa that wore off, I could deal with that.
Is this a hopeless quest?
I know you guys don't have all the answers either and I'm sorry this is so long, I just had questions, questions and appreciate any input.

Its going to take a lot of BuSpar to knock you out. Celexa is different for everyone.

I have little faith in Wellbutrin being used for anxiety because it can cause overstimulation.

BuSpar would be much better for the sexual problems, considering it is often used to combat sexual dysfunction on SSRIs. BuSpar is also good because at higher doses, it acts as an antidepressant comparable to any of the others, even Prozac (I don't have the studies in front of me right now to prove it, though).

If any of this stuff doesn't help with the anxiety, there is always venlafaxine XR, mirtazapine, oxazepam, temazapam, or other benzodiazepines.

Shari,

Ask your PDoc to take the Wellbutrin off. For sexual side effects, adding a low dose of Remeron is much more successful. Also, you might like to switch from Zoloft to Paxil or Celexa. If those headaches still don't go away, well... I don't have a solution. Wait a couple of weeks and see what happens.

Also, you can get off everything and take Buspar alone. It works for many people. I did have headaches with it, though... Serzone is an option too.

Cheer up ! You have many options left... Should headache be my sole problem, I would have been very content (-:

**Has Buspar made anyone excessively tired? My anxiety makes all my day to day stuff a chore, it's a struggle to do everything and I'm very tired alot already.**

Shari ~ I posted about a week ago asking if Buspar was causing my "exhaustion". Not many responses, so I figured it was just weird/weak me. I'm unable to function (3-1/2 week on 30 mg. a day) because I feel anxious and downright tired. Layed in the sun on my bedroom floor all day yesterday (after 10 hours' sleep). In fact, just this morning I made myself go to the gym (it's been 3 weeks) after getting the kids out the door (4,6,8). Could only do the bare minimum, and left in tears and drove to my GPs office and wrote a note describing what I was feeling. A nurse called me back and said that my doc is out of the office (of course), but another doctor will prescribe something else... something to quiet my heart and help me get some sleep! WAIT! I said... that's all I want to do is sleep. She said a lot of anxiety meds cause sleepiness. So now what? I should get off the internet in case they are trying to call. I'll post again tonight. Alli.

I was only on Wellbutrin and unfortunately the headaches from the Zoloft were really borderline Migraine which I am prone to so they were very disabling. Which sucked because my initial few days with Zoloft were fine...sometimes wonder if I should have stuck it out a little longer to see if the headaches went away. I was taking Excedrin to combat them but I get throwback headaches from taking that too much and besides, if at all possible, I'd just like to take one med and not have to take others to conteract side effects. Wouldn't we all :0)
Anyhow, thanks for the replies, my doc did switch me to Celexa, just took my first dose though I probably should have waited until morning to see what it does to me. If that doesn't work I'm going to try Buspar.
Wish me luck!
