mood swings, help please !

Posted by ben on March 31, 2001, at 13:08:35

I suffer from mood swings between normal mood and depression. I am taking 60 mg of Celexa and 1 mg Flupenthixol as an augmentation med. The problem is the instability of my mood. I tried tricyclics and lithium (stoped about awful nausea).
What could be a good option. Lamictal, Tegretol or what? Which med has fewer side effects (like sedation, dizziness..) What about Amisulpride, Risperdal or Zyprexa ? Generally I dont like the idea of neuroleptics (antipsychotics) because I think they make you indifferent instead I take flupenthixol (my docs bad idea ?!) with limited success.
Perhaps I should try an augmentation med to my SSRI (celexa), like Reboxetine (a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor). I heard it works well for less of motivation ,self esteem and anhedonia.
Thanks for your good suggestions and ideas.

You may need an anticonvulsant. It is unknown whether or not you will have side-effects from any them, but remember that there is a new Depakote_ER_ and Lamictal will gain full FDA approval for bipolar disorder soon (thus raising the confidence of its efficacy for sufferers).

Correct me if I am in error, but I think you have this idea of atypical neuroleptics (the newest antipsychotics) like they will make you doped up, dumb, or indifferent--all of the ideas that people have held about psychiatric medications for years. I guarantee this is not the case. If anything, I believe they will make your thoughts clearer--and hopefully destroy the cycling as Zyprexa has now been FDA approved for.

I took Risperdal, Zyprexa, and Seroquel (not all at the same time). I do not have psychosis or mania, yet they all at one point slowed down my cycling without the drowsiness or weight gain that others point out.

I am not sure if I am bipolar because my mood swings (normal to melancholic depressed) sometimes depend on outer circumstances (work, relationship...). I have a lot of negative rumination thoughts, loss of self esteem and motivation. The problem is the weak stability of my mood. I am only symptom free for short times (hours to max. day) and suddenly the depression (melancholic mood) turns back.
Are antipsychotics mood stabilizers too, or do they make indifferent, so you lose motivation?
Perhaps I have a neurotic depression which is harder to treat with meds than a endogenous one ???
