New to AD's week and a half on Zoloft

Posted by Shari on March 26, 2001, at 2:30:23

and the moods and feeling have lifted but I'm getting headaches everyday which are making it hard to function which is the same problem I was having before.(not functioning well that is) For two days I took 1 excedrin first thing in the morning and felt great those days, but today I waited and ended up feeling crappy most of the day due to mild headache. I also am getting a bladder infection and have swollen gland in my throat. Could these be related to Zoloft?
Is it too soon to ask Doc to try something else? Anyone else have headache problems that cleared up? Also seem to be having sexual side effects but since I didn't have much of a sex drive before, I figured feeling better would help that, just not as able to orgasm.

Shari - It is far too soon to tell if the Zoloft will work for you. An adequate trial should be at least 6 to 8 weeks. While Zoloft can cause lack of libido and anorgasmia, this is usually seen later in the treatment and your current flu-like symptoms could be adding to the lack of interest in sex. These symptoms may be attributable to the Zoloft, but on the other hand, you could have a spring cold. Just treat as you would any other cold; lots of liquids (pee off the bug) and lots of rest (if you can).

Hope this helps - Cam

Doc changed me to Wellbutrin SR anyhow » Cam W.

despite short period of time on Zoloft because my headaches were so bad. I have read headaches are common with Wellbutrin too, hopefully this will not cause them for me. I've noticed it is a different combo than most of the other SSRI's.
Do you think after only 1 week on 25 mg of Zoloft and just 5 days on 50mg I would need to worry about any aftereffects of just stopping? I wouldn't think after such a short period of time I would need to. Doc said to just stop Zoloft and go ahead and start taking twice a day (Wellbutrin SR), but I think from everything I've read I'll start out with one a day for a few days, then go up.
Appreciate any input.

Shari - I doubt that you will have any withdrawl side effects from a short trial of Zoloft. The half-life of Zoloft is much longer than that of Effexor, but is still less than a day.

Myself, I couldn't start taking 150mg of Wellbutrin SR twice daily for at least a week. They say to take one x 150mg for 3 days then increase it. I tried that and just couldn't sit still. I literally vibrated. Everyone is different, though, but I take only one a day for the first week.

Tell your doc you' like to do this. You should let him know that the books say to only take one x 150mg Wellbutrin SR for 3 to 7 days before increasing it, to minimize side effects.

Wellbutrin isn't an SSRI. The powers that be says it's a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake blocker, but I am not convinced that this is the mechanism of action. I'm not really sure how it works for depression, but it did for mine. The doses of Wellbutrin SR need to be taken at least 8 hours apart. I found that I could not take it after 4:00pm or I would have trouble sleeping. I would take it when I first got up in the morning (5:00am) and then again at 3:00pm or 4:00pm.

Hope this helps - Cam

prone to the over-excitability side effects so I will probably give it a little longer to adjust also, I took my first today and have hopes of it working well. (With the Zoloft I was okay as long as I didn't eat for an hour or so afterwards, when I ate too soon I was vibrating too)
I tend to have sleep problems also so I'll make sure to watch my timing with my second dose.
