How long to washout an AD?

Posted by chloe on March 20, 2001, at 19:14:34

I have been on an AD for at least 10 years. Elivil in the '80's, Prozac for 5 years, Zoloft for 5 years, then Serzone for about two months.

With my pdoc, I decided to discontinue AD's because I was no longer getting mood improvement, just more and more side effects.

After a three week taper, I have been off all AD's for about three weeks. My mood is pretty much the same, but I still have alot of the side effects, like the sweating, irritability, constipation and heartburn. Shouldn't these be gone by now? Or did I break something in my brain? I wonder if my body can still make seratonin on it's own?

Any info on AD washout would be greatly appreciated. I am worried I will be this way forever...

Thanks,
Chloe

I'm scared too...worried that paxil did something I can't fix. I got some advise to try SAMe to get things right again, and I'm all for that! Just started last night and I'll keep you posted if you like.
My thoughts are with you,
Garlin

Your body has been making seratonin all the time you were on AD's, the AD's just changed how it was used. From there a complex set of processes were changed over the course of several months, hopefully your condition improved at this point. It is reasonable to assume these processes will return to "normal" for you in at least the same amount of time. Months. Check the drug monograph on the manufactures web site for the terminal life of this drug. Do not expect everything to be back to normal at the point the drug has left your body. Your neurochemistry is still adjusting
at this point.

Nothing is "forever," my dear.

To quickly and efficiently rid your body of chemicals (and other toxic crap), drink at least 8 to 10 large glasses of spring water. EVIAN is good.
You might want to squeeze a couple of lemons in a gallon of spring water and drink that.
Every Monday, for the past 5 years, I've fasted on nothing but lemonized spring water.

Water: there's nothing quite like it for this sort of thing.

Months to stop the dizziness, nausea, pain, weight gain? Can you give more info on that Pat. Who can stay in bed or on the couch for months to withdraw from AD's? Not me! Yes... I drink over 2 gallons of water a day regardless. This is scary and why don't the doctors tell you this BEFORE prescrbing these types of meds so you can make an informed decision to take or not. This is worse than the depression I was going through.

I did not say anything about dizziness, nausea, pain, weight gain. I was describing the wash out process from a cold trukey stop. One should always titrate. If you are having these problems a slower titration is indicated. A slower titration will allow these side effects to be non existant or much less. At least they are in me when I titrate slowly. Ativin as needed is a big help.
