JUST RECEIVED MY ADRAFINIL - ANY SUGGESTIONS

Posted by BK on February 17, 2001, at 16:31:47

I finally received my Adrafinil in the mail and plan to start using it on Monday (2/19/01). I've literally tried every AD on the market as well as Lamictal, Cylert, Ritalin, mega vitamins, and all kinds of diets with very little or no success.

The only med that really helped me, albeit temporally, was Nardil. I suffer (which accurately describes it) from ADD and depression. At times, few and far between, I can feel ok, but when I知 down I can't concentrate, laugh, joke, and my memory is poor and my ability to write and speak very limited. Nardil really did relieve all of these symptoms. The most painful of these symptoms is my inability to laugh and joke. Sound familiar anyone?

Anyway, I値l send out some postings on my Adrafinil experimentation and would appreciate anyone else痴 comments regarding his or her experiences. I知 hoping that this may well be the one!

worse than this condition is not knowing the source of
our misery.

I've had very good luck so far with adderall; I notice
you don't include it in your list, nor dexadrine. Ritalin
tends to be really nasty for folks with depression and ADD.
Tofranil is the best AD for me even tho it slightly dampens
the action of the adderall.

May I ask what Adrafinil is?? Sounds sort of similar to modafinil???

Good luck to you.

S.,

I tried Adderal in really low doeses to relieve migraine pains which i get very infrequently. Your suggestion to try Adderal to help my ADD is a good one which i definitely will do once my experimentation with Adrafinil is complete, or unless, of course, it proves to be the one i been searching for. Dexadrine may also be something worthy of trying.

I read about Adrafinil on this board and it was highly recommended. I purchased it on-line from an English firm. (I previously included the site in case you are interested).

Is Tofranil a tricyclic? Thanks for the suggestions friend, and good luck to you too!

DAY 3

So far, no noticeable improvements in mood or concentration. Fortunately, no real side effects to speak of either. I'm still taking the minimum dossage, which i believe is 300 mg. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I've taken Adrafinil for nearly a year now, so I'm a little bit familiar with it. When I started I did 300mg the first day, felt nothing; 600mg the next day, felt a little bit; 900mg the third day, felt it but maybe too much; then backed down to 600mg for a couple weeks; and maintenance dose ended up being 300mg. Adrafinil, like most psychiatric drugs, can take time to do its thing. So you might have to play with dosing and be patient.

I felt benefits from Adrafinil beginning somewhere in the 2 to 3 week range. I first noticed I was getting interested in activities and hobbies (which I hadn't felt for many years!), being more talkative, and just generally more energetic. I don't think the full effects though came in until about week 6 or 8.

Though Adrafinil by itself was ok, I discovered by trial and error and tweeking experimentally that it works much better when combined with either Prozac, Zyprexa, Amisulpride, or any combination of them. I've done Adrafinil+Prozac, Adraf+Amisulpride, Adraf+Zyprexa, Adraf+Prozac+Amisulpride, Adraf+Prozac+Amisulpride+Zyprexa. For some strange reason, it just mixes real well with Prozac (but didn't with other SSRIs), and also mixes well with low dose antipsychotics. I have no idea why, just that that is the way things turned out.

Strange that Prozac by itself was not helpful; Amisulpride or Zyprexa alone were somewhat helpful; but any of them combined with Adrafinil was excellent. So rather than dump the Adrafinil if it doesn't help you much, think about combining it with something else. Hopefully though it will do the trick all by itself.

If it works for you, that would indicate that your NE receptors are somehow deficient, like perhaps genetically misfigured, blocked by contamination (heavy metals for example), or whatever. If NE is deficient, Adrafinil should be helpful. That would also explain why all the other things you tried didn't help much. They may have increased NE levels, but did nothing to enhance the receptors' abilities to work with the NE. No amount of NE is going to help if the receptors are not functioning properly, and that's where Adrafinil comes in. Also, in scientific studies, Adrafinil has indirect enhancing action on dopamine receptors. Perhaps that explains why it works well with antipsychotics. (No clue as to why it works with Prozac though, and not other SSRIs).

Anyway, Adrafinil does a lot of things that all those other meds you tried didn't do. So the odds are stacked in your favor, just by the process of elimination if nothing else. Just keep in mind that in my own experience, Adrafinil's best benefits were achieved when combined with Prozac or antipsychotic or both.

Hope something here is helpful.
John

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm going on my second week on Adrafinil at a dossage of 300mg. I really haven't felt much in the way of mood or cognitive enhancement. I do feel a little light headed, which I frequently experience when I'm on an AD.

I plan to stay the course, at least for another couple of weeks, and than perhaps supplement with Prozac, based on your recommendation. I believe i read a previous board from you in which you combined Sam-e with Adrafinil? I may well try that also. I haven't lost hope, but I remain very cautiously optimistic that Adrafinil may be the answer for me. Thanks again, John. Your insights are invaluable and much appreciated by all.

What is the indication of Adrafinil?
Does it require a liver test? If so what test?
Does it induce mania. Is it contraindicated with SSRI-Zoloft?

My husband has been suffering from wooden depressions. He's a bipolar. Cycles annually, up mood during Jan-April down mood in summer.

Would he have to take drug all year round-would it kick up mania.
