Hello :
I've just started Risperdal for negative symptoms. So far feel only sedated, weak and dizzy. How soon does this drug start working ? I've seen conflicting opinions on the net : in an hour, takes several weeks (about antipsychotics in general). How effective Risperdal is for negative symptoms ?
Thanks a lot,
J.L.

Hello :
Just found interesting facts about Risperdal in the Pharmacologic Category Index of Drake University (http://informatics.drake.edu/nursap_f/html/index/idxid2.htm).
Never heard that Risperdal 'Has potential for psychological or physiological dependence, abuse, and tolerance'.
Also 'Not compatible with tea or cola.', 'Dilute solution with water, milk, orange or grapefruit juice; do not dilute with beverages containing caffeine, tannin, or pectinate (eg, coffee, colas, tea, or apple juice).
Does anybody comply ? The exact link to the article is http://informatics.drake.edu/nursap_f/html/chapter/mono/bt112350.htm#bt112350 .J.L.

> J.L.Hi:
It took about a week for the Risperdal to work for me. I, too, felt quite sleepy initially but it faded.
Unfortunately, I have decided to give it up ( at least try to) because it has caused other problems for me ( no menses now in 12 weeks)
Other than that, Risperdal was very effective for treating depression and social phobia. I did however take other meds w/ it ( Prozac, Wellbutrin and lastly mirapex)
Just thought I would pass this info. to you.I wish u all the best, I hope it works ou for you!
Nat
PS: It's been 2 days that I have been off it and I've been quite aggitated.

"Dilute solution with water, milk, orange or grapefruit juice; do not dilute with beverages containing caffeine, tannin, or pectinate (eg, coffee, colas, tea, or apple juice)." This refers to the liquid form of Risperdal, not the tablets, so you don't need to worry about being unable to drink these beverages. The solution by itself usually tastes nasty, so it is mixed with something else - otherwise nobody would want to drink it.
