I am new on this drug (Effexor) and am experiencing terrible headaches. I am unable to take Prozac and all the rest of those type of drugs because they gave me such terrible headaches. Should I continue taking this drug with hopes headaches will subside? I have been taking it for only 10 days. Thanks!

Hi Abby: I also am a migraine sufferer with or without any medication. I am now on Prozac and sometimes I get the headaches [I'm only on it 5 weeks]. I take a Maxalt which takes my migraine away. My understanding from other people is that some people go through a headache phase on the SSRIs for 2 weeks thru 3 months for some; but it does go away. For others it does not. I feel if you find a med that works well and you can take something for headache relief, I would give it 3 months. I do sympathize, because there's not too many things worse than a severe headache. Withdrawing from these meds can cause horrendous headaches unless done every so slowly over many weeks, especially Paxil and Effexor. Take care.

My dad prescribes low-dose amitriptyline for chronic headaches, which is good because it also adds an antidepressant effect.

I had headaches on Paxil and Celexa. Rotated Fioricet/Xanax/Excedrin...woke up almost daily with a killer. Started on Zoloft (25mg) and have been relatively headache free (means about one minor one per week). This has not happened for over ten years. Take only two excedrin to knock 'em off. Good luck.
