New and hello!

Posted by Sulpicia on January 29, 2001, at 6:42:19

Hi Folks -- nice board here with great info!
Can you find room for:
one 30something female dx ADD, depression, 10+ yrs clean and sober, blissfully tx adderall, paxil, and a good sense of humor?

I usually post over at the MGH neuro forums, especially for my daughter, 15 dx bipolar II and psychedelic substance abuse. Tx not going so well right now -- if anyone's got any thoughts on lamictal, would you be nice enough to look at my restart dosage post? Could sure use some ideas here.

Anyway, back to work for me. Will be in serious stuff if I don't get done.
Of course it would be useful if I weren't goofing around on line...

L. :)

From one 30 something female with ADD and depression to another, welcome!

I replied earlier to a posting of yours in response to a question asked by Bryce about intelligence enhancing drugs. I completely agreed with your answer. Similarly afflicted minds must think alike!

Dear Sulpicia,
Welcome. I am relatively new myself. I used to post over at the neurology forums at MGH but found it so hard to get through. Maybe I should get DSL service. I am 14+ years clean and sober. Feels good NOW, doesn't it. That sense of humor is good medicine, too. Sorry I don't know anything about the medicines you have questions on but feel free to email me if you want. It's so nice to find posts from fellow people clean and sober. :-)

Gifted minds do think alike. :) :)
And I hated the GREs so badly -- I can still remember the horror. Of course pre-ADD dx so double trouble.

May I ask what you did after GREs? Don't wish to pry -- still don't have the feel of the board yet.
I'm currently wretched/ecstatic in 4th yr of PhD.
Thanks for the welcome.

Hi Pat -- thanks for the welcome. That's a lot of years you have there. Congrats!
MHG: lots of tech upgrades ongoing for a bit; seems to be done now. DK about your server [some days I think there all just goofing off to bug us] but perhaps try now if you want to go back and say hi?

Have a great day.

Hello--I like the way you come into a "room" and introduce yourself---that was cool.

Your post also reminded me of some dark humor posts we had here a while back on "personal ads" based on our MH status, etc.

Hi Noa -- eek, personal ads.......
Hope I didn't offend!
BTW, thanks for the great PANDAS links. No idea when I'll get to them but have them stashed away.

Nice to meet you.

Pry away! I'm kidding, I don't think anyone would consider it prying. We are all here to learn from each other. Personally, I'm glad to learn I am not the only person in the world with both ADD and a few gray hairs!

I took the GRE pre-ADD diagnosis too, but the test didn't seem to bother me at all. For some reason, I always do really well on those kinds of things -- it must be that hyperfocusing thing. Afterwards, I am a totally useless waste of human flesh; it's as if I used all my concentration and energy for the entire day in those few hours.

What did I do after the GRE? Absolutely nothing! I took it in case I wanted to go to graduate school (I was 24 when I took it and already bored with my job). I had heard that some scholarships/fellowships/graduate assistantships were was based on GRE scores, so I wanted to see if graduate school would even be economically feasible. My husband was already in graduate school at the time, so it would have been difficult for two to go at the same time.

I didn't really have any particular major in mind; I couldn't think of *anything* I found interesting enough to study in such depth. I also never got around to filling out applications...so I pretty much took it for nothing. I don't regret it too much, I did better on it that my husband did and knowing that was well worth the time and money!

I can still sympathize with your situation (4th year PhD student). I can remember well when my husband was working on his dissertation; we *both* suffered! Grad school is a unique form of torture that I never could have imagined had I not seen it close up as I did.

What are you studying? Are you working on the dissertation? I have a slightly used dissertation that I might be able to sell -- I'm fairly sure it was never read.
