Someone close to me who suffers from recurring bouts of deep depression recently posed the following question:
"I keep taking my medications rigidly like I have done all along and find myself greatly puzzled as to why they offer me relief at times, while during other moments they leave me dangling in the wind with no
respite from the pain. The illness still cycles in complete disregard to these chemicals that are supposed to stabilize and to modify my neurotransmitters. I know of no biological reason for this though I believe that's where the answer to my illness lays. If there is an answer, my doctor's aren't telling me the reason for such an occurrence."Can anyone give insights?

Most of us are in the same boat. Although we crave for an explaination, ( and relief from the depression of course) there is not one. The popular neurotransmitter theory does'nt hold water. Look at the most recent research on neurosteroids, HPA axis, endocrine system in depression and you will certainly see how much is unkown about depression.
As of now we are left to try AD after AD until we
find one that helps. Eventually better treatments will become available, and in the long run a clear understanding of depression.

Because biochemistry is only half the picture. the other half of the picture is life events, amount of social support, and current life circumstances.
