Risperdal experiences? Please, Help!

Posted by angelrose on November 12, 2000, at 22:01:46

Hi,
I'm getting increasingly frustrated and dissapointed in my attempts to find a good doctor. I've seen 5 in the last 6 months and I cannot understand why the only meds. they want to give me are SSRI's which are not satisfactory in my personal opinion.
I'm sick and tired of feeling hopeless. I'm starting to wonder if I will ever feel happy.

I do not really know if the Prozac is helping. I'm also taking Buspar for anxiety but I'm not too impressed with this drug. I'm having more Panic attacks now on Prozac than when I was on Paxil. BUT I put on too much weight. I found out recently that Paxil is the worst drug to give anybody who has an eating disorder. I've had 3 major panic attacks in the last month and had to take some Lorazepam.
I have no desire to leave my house or do anything for that matter. It is getting really hard for me to function. The older I get the worse I feel.

Tomorrow, I'm seing my doctor, not a shrink, and I'm thinking of asking him about Risperdal. Last time he was uneasy about adding anything like that with the Prozac.

I would appreciate any experiences, positive and negative. Is it a good add, or is it best to take on its own.

Thanks to all.

How much Prozac are you taking? When I first started taking it, it made me very jittery. I had to start taking it in liquid form because the lowest dose in capsule form is 10mg.

Buspar also gave me a panic attack the one and only time I took it.

My son took risperdal for bipolar for awhile and it was a little too sedating for him at the lowest dosage and nothing knocks him out. I tried one of his pills once and I didn't find it very relaxing.

I take depakote, prozac, and topamax now.

Hi Karen:
Thanks for your input.
How have these meds helped you?

My doctor suggested Zyprexa, I think I will give it a try.

Angelrose,

I have had a lot of success with Zyprexa. Since I responded well to it, my pdoc has prescribed it for other patients in a similar condition. I tried Risperdal once but it was much too sedating for me. Zyprexa is also sedating but I found that initial phase to go away after about two weeks. If you want to give it a try I would suggest that you start on a Friday evening. At least that way you can get past some of the initial sedation effects.

One thing that may concern you is that Zyprexa is known to cause weight gain in a lot of people. I am in the middle of losing the weight I put on initially. It can be done if you watch your diet and excersize properly.

Also, I am taking 7.5 mg/day. We started out with 2.5mg doses until we found a good theraputic dose. If your doctor and you are both willing to give it a try I would suggest that others have responded well to the low dosage.

Hope this helps a little and best of luck with whatever you finally decide on.

Chris

I went off risperdal because I wanted to see how I was without it. It was doing me good but I was concerned about hormonal changes and eating too much. After I went off of the risperdal my mood took a dive and it was like I would be okay for awhile and then dive back down. After 3 weeks without it I went back on the lowest possible dose which is .25. They are now making it in .25, and another one lower than 1 mg besides the higher doses that have been out for a long time. Anyways, my mood is on more of an even keel now. I also take 112.5 mg. of effexor xr and 30 mg. of paxil and this combination does not make me eat a lot even though I have an eating problem (ask me what problem I don't have! ;-) )I noticed that when I take some ativan my appetite revs up so I'm looking out for that. I like risperdal a lot-it's helped me immensely. They are finding that very low doses work with some people now, took! Great news!

Hi, thanks to all who have responded.
I think the Prozac is helping for my depression and OCD but as far as anxiety and social phobia go it's hopeless.
The Ativan I use only in dire need. Today, I quit Buspar and I will start Zyprexa. Hopefully, the weight gain won't be too dramatic.

risperdal and tics or TD, ask for akineton

If you're taking risperdal and suffer from tics or TD. ask your doc to prescribe akineton (bipendene).
