SAD light box info--thanks to Angela!

Posted by Noa on November 13, 2000, at 17:06:18

Angela, I think I might have a seasonal pattern as an overlay to my depression, and was starting to think about getting a light box, but am pretty broke. My therapist asked if insurance might cover it, and I didn't know. BUT, I went straight to your folder at PBtips and there it is--sample letters to insurance companies. Thank you. I'll keep you posted.

http://www.egroups.com/links/psycho-babble-tips

is the link to folders.

Noa -

From what I've read, getting the insurance co.s to help can be a fight. If there's any info that I can help you to find, etc., please let me know - I'm getting pretty good at searching for this stuff! ;) Also, I read that SunBox Co., while they don't advertise it, is willing to work out interest-free payment plans. This may be something to try while waiting on reimbursement.

Best of luck, and please keep us posted!

Angela

As can be seen in the Tips folder I have been using a light box since last winter. It is very effective as a complement to my AD's. Living in upstate NY we tend to get early winters as afr as sunlight goes.

I got my box from Apollo and have never had a problem with it. My pdoc wrote a letter to my insurance company and they paid for half of the box cost. It can be done.

Hope you have a good experience if you try the lights.

Chris

Hi there... Haven't posted in a bit, but found this thread interesting... My husband suffers from SAD, instead of an expensive box, he went to the local Home Depot and bought 800 watts of wide spectrum bulbs and some inexpensive "shop light" fixtures for them. All in all he spent $250 and it is very effective. They aren't the most attractive things to have on the bedroom wall, but they sure help him get up on those dark mornings...

Sarah, do you know how many lumens you get from it? And at what distance?
