Oops, I took too much Effexor! Will it hurt me?

Posted by Shell on October 31, 2000, at 21:46:20

I usually take 300 mg Effexor XR every morning. Recently, I have been using four 75 mg capsules. My latest prescription is for 150 mg capsules. This morning, I, by habit, opened the new bottle of Effexor (150 mg capsules) and swallowed four of them (600 mg).

Has anyone ever taken this large of a dose of Effexor before? How dangerous is it? I really didn't notice any difference; I didn't feel funny or have any side effects. Should I still take my regular dose (300 mg) tomorrow?

Thanks,
Shell

I think I would skip tomorrow and wait till the following morning to take the 300. After all you took 2 doses. That seems like a safe bet to me. I hope you can get some sleep on a dose that high. I read that someone else has taken a dose that high. Maybe it would also be a good idea to call your doctor or whoever is on call where your doctor is. Or you could call a nurse-on-call or a hospital emergency to ask about it,too, if you don't get all the information you need here. There is also a site that has med. info at:

Best wishes to you! Hope you will be okay!

By now you know if you've survived the initial overdose, but in the future you should always call your doc or a poison control hotline about accidental overdoses. As for whether or not you should take a dose this morning, you will definately want to call your doctor on this. You may make it worse by adding more medication into your system, or you may have withdrawal symptoms by skipping the dose, and who know which is worse. You may be able to get this info from your pharmacist. Be sure and let whoever you call know that this is about an accidental overdose; that will get them to respond quicker since this is a time critical issue.

I hope you're doing okay today. Good luck.

I agree about calling the doc.

And, it is not necessarily the case that skipping tomorrow's dose makes sense, because effexor has a relatively short half life and you could experience withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor.

I'm interested in knowing what you did and what happened? How are you doing now?

I really didn't notice any difference. I kept waiting to feel funny, but nothing happened. I called a local teaching hospital's hotline and they told me that 600 mg is not an unheard of dose. They also said that I might expect any side effects that I normally experience with Effexor to be magnified. I never have had any side effects with Effexor and even at this dose I didn't have any.

I did read somewhere that people have taken more than 6,000 mg without any major problems. I went back to my normal dose of 300 mg without incident.

Thanks so much for all the help and concern.

Hey, you're welcome! Glad to see you are okay and alive! If I took that much effexor I'd probably never sleep again and God knows what else would happen to me. I'm on a much lower dose because I can't take high doses of medicines. I'm happy that it didn't phase you.:-)

Glad you are ok. Your mentioning the 6000 mg reminds me that I once heard that effexor isn't a risk for suicide by overdose.
