I had written a month ago about my 18 year old son who was going to college on wellbutrin. Anyway, long story short, he couldn't handle the anxiety he felt there, came home and decided to go off meds. He has had awful binge eating episodes where he is extremely agitated and the psychiatrist has diagnosed him as bipolar which I think is accurate. Maybe this is why he has never had luck on ADs for very long. This is his first mood stabilizer. He put him yesterday on topamax - 50 mgs. Anyone have any luck with topaax decreasing the overwhelming need to binge? He has gianed 25 pounds in a montha nad absolutely hates himself. I am really worried.
Please respond.

> I have been taking Topamax since June starting with 25 mgs. now I am up to 400 mgs. it does help with weight loss. I have lost all the weight I gained (16 pounds) from being on previous medications and I am now back down to the proper weight for my height. As a mood stabilizer I can not give it that great of a recommendation, but everyone is differn't. As you can see from my posts on the "social" board from last month I was really struggling with my mood. My doctor even tried adding Zyprexia that didn't help and has since stopped it. I am just taking the Topamax. Somethimes I think I have let myself get to caught up with the weight loss and not serious enough about trying something that will help with the most important thing which is the mood stabilisation. I also suffer from Bipolar. Just be sure to keep everything in perspective and do not trade one problem for another. Thin is nice but being alive at any size is what is important. Lexie
