Scared to death

Posted by Mare on September 30, 2000, at 19:13:00

I'm just starting to take Effexor tonight and I'm scared to death. This is the third drug I've tried (besides Celexa and Prozac) and both of the previous cause more harm than good! It doesn't say anything about being XR on the bottle. I'm starting taking 25 mg the first 3 days, 50 the next four and then 75 for a week after that. I'm nervous and scared because all I seem to hear is negative or that it works wonders for a few weeks then wears off like a honeymoon effect. I just want something to work that won't give me migraines, ruin my concentration/motivation and I'm tired of hellish dreams. Anybody have anythoughts? They would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Mare

James here.....

I have been on effexor since 1995, with no problems. It is a very effective AD for me, the
most effective I have ever been on (all of them, over 15 yrs, except MAOI's) YMMV

Effexor XR has a longer half life, but the drug itself is the same. I've taken it for about a year and a half, and while I can hardly wait to stop taking it, it's not because of side effects.

For me, it works wonders. I was terrified, too, when I started it, but now I can't say enough about it. I've never had an AD which was so effective and didn't numb me. Good luck, and I hope that it works for you, too. I do hope you feel better soon, and don't worry too much about side effects. The only ones I've had went away within the first week, so it can be good too.

Good luck.

Hi there,

Just my own personal experience, I was on Effexor XR (unknown dosage) last year and was on it for less than a week; massive insomnia and headaches that were brutal; plus it causes sexual dysfunction in a lot of people; HOWEVER, to some people it has been a wonder drug, and it may sure be for you. All drugs affect people differently, but if you can't handle the side effects it isn't worth it.

It's always scary to start a new medication and you are doing the right thing by researching it. rxlist.com is a good site; try going to ask.com and type in 'effexor' or 'what are the side effects of effexor' and it is an excellent search engine and may give you some helpful links. Also www.northernlight.com or altavista.com.

You could also try alt.support.depression.medicaiton but right now it's going through flame-city and you have to really build a huge killfile in order to filter out all of the crap; there are about three people who are just ruining the NG.

Also if you use a Mac Sherlock is AWESOME.

Never take to heart product monographs from the drug company; their statistics are usually incorrect (i.e. sexual dysfunction) - reading personal experiences like those on this board plus your own research will probably do wonders and answer all the questions you have.

I have gone through the whirlwind of every single SSRI and above imagineable so finally had to go back to parnate - treatment resistant. Hopefully this drug will work for you!

Good luck :-)

I'm going cold turkey off effexor due to its negative sexual side effects (inability to achieve orgasm...but horny all the time)...I've been on other ad's, and compare effexor to prozac in both its lack of help to me personally and its sexual side effect....I didn't have any particular problems other than that...the detox from it is horrible however and I am not fairing well......frankly the most effective drug for me has been marajuana...unfortunately it stays in my system to short a time, you have to smoke it and , oh yeah, its illegal....
Good luck...don't be scared and if its not right, wean yourself off carefully.
