I won't bore you with the details, but I have something going on with my jaw muscles and am on a muscle relaxant called, "SOMA", generic name, "Carisoprodol". I looked it up and got basic info, but could not find any answer to my main question: Is there an effective alternative with a less sedating effect? Here I'm treating my depression fatigue with Adderall and now I've got this other stuff adding to the fatigue. I know I don't have any "interactions" to worry about, but I just keep thinking that there's got to be something that will help muscles relax without making me need a nap! What about something topical? Also, I'm reading that one of the side effects is "depression and/or irritablility", since I already have those, it seems a bit nonsensical to take a medicine which can cause them.
Thanx to everyone who can help, and 'yes', I am asking my Dr. the same questions, but you know Dr's, my chances are better for hearing something from you all first! Thank you again, CarolAnn

CA -
Valium is a muscle relaxant also. I don't find valium (diazepam) sedating, and I don't use it frequently. I usually take 10 mg. when I use it and never feel a thing except more relaxed (slightly).Shar

Carol,
After my back surgery, I took two different muscle relaxers, Methocarbamol and Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine). Both worked very well, but the least sedating of the two for me was the Meth. There was an initial day or two of drowsiness which there is with almost all pain killers and relaxants, but after that the drowsy feeling went away. You can get some good info on both of these ate the following URLs:
http://www.rx.com/reference/factsheets/detail.jhtml?leafletname=methocarbamol
http://www.rx.com/reference/factsheets/detail.jhtml?leafletname=cyclobenzaprine
I hope this helps a bit.
Love ya,

Soma is my fav. You need to remember that none
of the "muscle Relaxants" like Flexeril,Soma, ect
directly relax muscle. They work by causing sedation. Not till you get to meds generally used in surgury do the meds really have direct action. So there are not any "muscle Relaxants" that are not sedating. Flexeril is realted to TCA's, I find Soma to be the least sedating.

Greg's response reminded me that I had tried methocarbomol (sp) at one time also. I had no effects from it; sedation, relaxation, or otherwise. However, a friend in need took one and thought it was outstanding.
