James here....
I am big on the Omega's. Don't just take one, take all 3 (Omega 3,6,9).
These are essential fatty acids. Essential for life, like C, A and D.
They are also deficant in most diets. You need to eat alot of varied stuff
to get them. The Gov. has not set a RDA for them or if there is one it is
too low. There is a revised RDA in the works which will cover many "essentials"
that were missed and values raised on some that preexist. I predict this will have
a very signaficant effect on morbidity and mortality in some nations.
I personally prefer plant sources for these oils and many other things. The conditions
are well controled, if your pick the right brand, so there is no posibility of metals, ect.
Flaxseed is good bet. Hempseed oil has the all time high (no joke intended) concentrations of all 3 oil's, 1 of which is
really hard to find elsewhere. Does not have THC in the oil ! Hemp seed itself contains little THC, anyway."McMan's Depression and Bipolar Weekly"
OMEGA-3
If you're planning on eating salmon or other fish to boost the omega-3 in your diet, don't go with farm-raised fish, advises Andrew Stoll MD of Harvard and McLean Hospital. Dr Stoll authored the fish oil-bipolar study that drew so much attention when it appeared last year in the May Archives of General Psychiatry. He was addressing a session at the recent NDMDA Conference in Boston.
Omega-3 fatty acids proceed up the food chain from algae to ocean fish. Farm-raised fish, however, are fed grains which contain no omega-3. Dr Stoll also cautioned against even one can of tuna a week, as it contains too much mercury.
Citing other studies, Dr Stoll noted researchers have found lower omega-3 in people with depression, that populations that eat a lot of fish have less depression, and there are abnormalities in the "omega-3 dependent eicosanoid and cytokine pathways" in the brain during major depression.
In his original study, 30 bipolar patients were given fish oil pills or placebos in conjunction with their other medications. The results were so striking after four months that he stopped what was to have been a nine-month study. A new and much larger study will take three years.
If you are planning to use omega-3 as a supplement, Dr Stoll advises you make sure that:* The maximum concentration is 90 percent.
* It has more EPA than DHA
* It has no heavy metal.
* It has no fish concentrations.Fish oil is preferred to flaxseed oil, as it is more proven. Take 1.5 to 3.5 grams a day, with food, and use with antioxidant vitamins C and E.
MORE ON OMEGA-3
Dr Stoll acknowledged his study was somewhat flawed owing to the fact that the placebo capsules were of olive oil and tasted different than the fish capsules. In one case, one person's cat actually attacked the capsules.
Of course, he joked, you want a flawed study. "That way you get money to do another study."NEW OMEGA-3 STUDY
Dr Stoll is looking for people to participate in his new Omega-3 study. For more information, please call Dr Stoll at (617) 855-2614 in Belmont, MA, or Lauren Marangell MD at (713) 798-5643 in Houston, TX.

James,
I posted this a little while ago.About a year ago I started taking 18 grams of Omega 3 fish oils (6 -3 tid). Each 1000 mg contains EPA 360;
DHA 240.
I'm not sure how much it has helped the depression but my Cholesterol level dropped from to 570 to 293. It is
still dropping and I will have it tested again in another month. My triglyceride levels made an even more dramatic
drop -I'd have to dig out the lab results to be specific.
About two years ago I started Synthroid for mild hypothyroid. Hypothyroid can aggravate chol/lipid levels, so that
may have helped also, but the doctor feels it is the fish oils doing the trick.
Oddly (fortunately), I rarely experience any fishy taste.
update:
My original Cholesterol was actualyy 750!
I've since dropped the dosage to 9 grams

I eat Omega-3 everyday. But I don't feel that it helps so much.
But i read that Omega-3 should be combinated with the acid B-6.
I tried to find B-6 here in Sweden but there isn't any way to get it.
So now I am going to ordering it from another country. It can't be unlegal because it's just a vitamine.
Maybe it could be a tip for someone.
Take care.

Mania,
Since you are Sweden, can you tell me if Ziprasidone, an antipsychotic is marketed there?
Can people from other countries order from Swedish pharmacies?
Do you know a Swedish pharmacy that does mail orders?

Hi Andrew...
I never heard of Ziprasidone in Sweden. Maybe because the meds can have different names i different countries.
They gave me Risperdal (antipsychotic-med) when I was high manic.
All meds in Sweden are very hard to get. You need prescriptions of almoust everything dispite headachepills.
Otherwise I could have helpt you.
Maybe we can search for a good farmacy outthere and tell eachother when we find one.
