need sedation/no weight gain??

Posted by bee on August 13, 2000, at 11:44:22

I have read posts and searched the archives for a med. that is as/or just about sedating as Elavil. I have gained about 25 lbs. on elavil and am tired of the weight gain and carbohydrate cravings.

Remeron is a newer med. but I read that weight gain is common. I realize that each person reacts differently to meds. but wonder if I will gain more weight if I switch to Remeron? People say to watch your diet but I definately find it hard not to eat cookies, cakes, etc... while on Elavil!

I have tried to decrease and even go off of Elavil but within a week, I crash and have to go back up. When decreasing, the cravings go away.

The SSRI's make me jumpy, insommnia and aggressive. Not a happy homelife while I was on these! Effexor, Zoloft, Serzone, Paxil, Wellbutrin.

I also tried St. John's Wort and tryptophan but had problems with them also. This is very frustrating.

I have also tried imipramine but still found insommnia plus bad dreams and night sweats. Another option is trying Sinequan or Surmontil. How are these two compared to Elavil?

Thanks.

Bee

Bee:

Wanted to let you know that I have been on Remeron for 4 months and have gained TWENTY pounds...and it's the only med I've ever gained weight on...I'm taking 30mg and hear that if I go to 45mg the weight gain should stop...but that I won't lose the weight 'magically'.

Rem. is sedating at lower doses but all side-effects eventually decrease with increased mgs.

Just wanted to let you know my experience. Hope you find something that works for you...but if you don't want to gain more weight, I wouldn't recommend Remeron.

IMHO,
Jane

I had horrible insomnia! Tried many meds and found Klonopin to be the most effective with the least side affects. Controversial med but a life and sleep saver for me. (Sinequan worked but horrible dry mouth that kept waking me up, Remeron caused my first weight gain of my life--uncontrollable cravings for carbos.) At first I felt weak on Klonopin but now I feel steady and get the sleep I need to keep me out of depression.

Bee, Sinequan was the most sedating AD I ever took. It also was an appetite stimulant. (I didn't gain as much weight as I might have because I was sleeping all the time instead of eating.) I think that is pretty much its reputation with most people. It was also a great antihistamine. I stopped being so sleepy after about a month but started having extreme tremors in my hands and so discontinued shortly afterwards.

Good luck

FWIW,
I took Sinequan for many years and it worked like a charm with no side effects.
Hope you have the same experience if you take it.

Bee,
Maybe you've already gone through it, but there's an eGroups link on Remeron with a folder on weight gain (under the side effects heading), among other things.

I had really bad insomnia and Remeron was a miracle drug for that. I did gain weight. Wellbutrin augmentation helped me lose the weight. I wonder how long did you take the Wellbutrin? It can cause agitation and irritability, tremors and the like for a few weeks but that wears off.

Best wishes,
allison

James here....

I took Sinequan from 1985 to 1993'ish when it pooped out, otherwise it was great.
After that I took it for sleep with Effexor till I decided
it was flatening my mood to much. I now take Remeron.

James here....

This would be a good next choice. I took it after
Sinequan, it was not as sedating as Sinequan and did not
make me as hungury.
